Show NICU Nurse Breast Pump Education BACKGROUND Early breast pump education is necessary to help establish milk supply. Recognizing knowledge gaps in breast pump use and implementing clear nursing guidelines are needed to address these challenges. • Early establishment of breast pumping impacts the likelihood of an infant being discharged with mother’s milk. 4 Kat Tice, BSN, RN, MSN Student Dr. Jamie Wankier, EdD, MSN, RN, Associate Professor Shamar Lejardi, MSN, BSN, RN INTERVENTIONS • Step 1: Obtain project plan approval from the NICU manager. • Step 2: Administer pre-survey to establish baseline of nurse confidence and knowledge. • Step 3: Distribute breast pump PowerPoint presentation. • Step 4: Skills day to incorporate pass-off and simulation scenario. • Step 5: Conduct chart audit. • Step 6: Conduct a post-survey to evaluate the effectiveness of guidelines and education. • Inconsistent information erodes trust in the healthcare team. 2 • Barriers included inconsistent milk measurements, excessive workload, insufficient time for education, and limited personal knowledge of breast pumps. 1 METHODS The theoretical framework guiding this project is the Iowa Model of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP). The following deliverables were developed to provide diverse learning modalities and to assess the project’s effectiveness. • Breast pump PowerPoint presentation narrated by project lead. • Pre- and post- surveys to evaluate confidence and assess knowledge regarding breast pump use. • Breast Pump skill pass-off. • Simulation scenario for skill practice in a risk-free setting. • Practice guideline posters to be displayed in the unit. • Chart audit form to track guideline adherence.
