Show ANNOUNCEMENT.By the request of several teachers and students of Ogden and Weber County the faculty of the Weber Stake Academy has decided to conduct a Summer School in Ogden during the summer vacation. The courses offered will be specially arranged for the benefit of teachers and students who desire to take examination for State Certificates and Diplomas, and also for those who for other purposes desire to pursue courses of study.In compliance with the requirements of the State Law the following outlined courses will be offered:PHYSIOLOGY.The course in physiology will comprise lectures on the skeleton, its component parts, with the adaptation of each to its prescribed functions; the muscular, the digestive and the nervous systems; the organs of protection and their uses; the special senses; the organs of speech and production of voice; human hygiene with special reference to its application to the schoolroom; also stimulants and narcotics. Text book for reference "Blaisdell's." Five hours per week.GEOGRAPHY.In geograpy the course given will have for its main object a general knowledge of the form and structure of the earth, with its natural divisions into continents, islands, oceans, seas, gulfs and bays, together with a particular knowledge of the principal countries, their cities, customs, habits, and avocations of the people as well as their advancement in arts, science, and civilization. As the course will be given by diagram and lectures any text book now in use in schools will serve the purpose. Five hours per week.CIVIL GOVERNMENT.In this branch the government of our own country, with the constitution as its basis will form the main features; the aim being to present a course that will cover such points of importance as are absolutely necessary for a well informed citizen to become acquainted with and a teacher to know in order to lay in the schoolroom the foundation of intelligent citizenship. Text book used for reference "Fiske's Civil Goverment." Five hours per week.GRAMMAR.It is designed in this study to cover as thoroughly as possible the entire course. Special attention will be given to the sentence, its structure and analysis; to the parts of speech, and their inflections, etc. "Whitney's Essentials of English Grammar." Five hours per week.ARITHMETIC.Common and decimal fractions; percentage, with its application to interest, discount, stocks and bonds, etc.; Ratio and proportion; square and cube root; the metric system, etc. The above will be presented, and correlated with the leading ideas of the Speer Methods. "Milne's Arithmetic." Five hours per week.ALGEBRA.Attention will be given to the fundamental processes, simple equations, factors and fractions, simultaneous equations inequalities, etc. "Wentworth's School Algebra." Five hours per week.BOTANY.The course in botany will deal with the structure and physiology of plants, germination of seeds, venation, morphology of parts, adaptation, fertilization, and classification. Our local flora will receive special attention. "Bergen's Botany and Coulter's Manuel." Five hours per week.PHYSICS.This course will deal with the properties of matter, physical units of measurement, mechanics, sound, light, heat, electricity, magnetism, and physical theories. "Avery's School Physics." Five hours per week.PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY.The physical aspects of the earth, its placeand relation in the solar system, movements of the winds and waters and their effects upon climate, earthquakes, volcanoes, and the distribution of plants and animals will be considered. "Tarr's Physical Geography." Five hours per week.Additional classes will be organized in science, languages, literature, and mathematics if the number of applicants for the same will justify it.Arrangements have been made with Prof. Fairbanks, Superintendent of Drawing in the Ogden Schools, to give special instruction in drawing. |
