Show Shift Breaks Effect on Job Satisfaction BACKGROUND Nursing tasks can be demanding and stressful for many nurses, affecting job satisfaction and burnout. This project aims to educate stakeholders and implement a shift break process in an ambulatory surgical center to increase job satisfaction and potentially decrease nurse burnout. • Skipped or interrupted breaks and the duration of meal breaks are linked to emotional and physical exhaustion, fatigue, and back pain.5 • Rest breaks can significantly lower fatigue in nurses during their shifts.2 • Structured shift breaks can decrease nurse burnout, improve patient care, and decrease potential errors.4 Sayley Timothy, BSN, RN, MSN Student Jamie Wankier Randles, EdD, MSN, RN, Associate Professor Cobi Arnett, MSN, RN INTERVENTIONS This shift break process will ensure that stakeholders are adequately educated and that job satisfaction is measured among the nursing staff. • Step 1: Educate stakeholders on the importance of shift breaks throughout the presentation. • Step 2: Nurses are provided with a pre-survey and education to measure job satisfaction and educate them on the importance of participation. • Step 3: Nurses covering nurses will implement the shift break process. • Step 4: Post-survey provided to measure job satisfaction among nurses. IMPACTS This project benefits staff nurses in the ambulatory surgical center by providing a shift break process that allows nurses to take breaks during their shifts. This shift break system can result in an improvement in job satisfaction. METHODS The framework model used for this project was the Stevens Star Model of Knowledge Transformation. This framework was used because it uses evidence to make a change and includes evaluating the outcome. The outcome of this project will be assessed for effectiveness and changed as needed. The deliverables were created to educate stakeholders and measure the project's effectiveness. • A PowerPoint presentation was created to educate stakeholders. • Pre- and post-surveys are given to nurses to measure job satisfaction. • A PowerPoint presentation is provided to nurses. • A poster is displayed in the breakroom to encourage taking breaks. • A timeline is provided to notify staff of the process timeline. • A sign-up sheet to determine that staff have reviewed the education.
