We have had a very pleasant summer and are now enjoying the best part of the year, It has been very dry, going onto three months without rain. It is a long time between drinks, Matt and I recently took a trip over the Montana ranches and also covered the old Nevada ranch. Took us nearly two weeks and set us somewhat behind. He is now trying to catch up with his work and write a report on the Nevada layout at the same time. It is very much run down, and confidentially something must be done, Some of'us recently bought quite heavily into the Utah Construction Company, including you, and now we have one more interest to look out for, Don’t like to talk about unpleasant things, but you may have heard that Gene's daughter, Elizabeth, received notice that her husband has been missing in France since August lst. She has a five months old baby girl. Junior Rich has been called overseas also which will leave Blanche and another four kids alone. Well, a few more women and Children to look after shouldn't make much difference to me. I should have been a fundamentalist in the first place. Little Telitha also has a month old baby girl. Her husband John Lindquist is a bombadier over France and we are holding our breath on that account. Val is in the east and seems to be getting along all right with his work, Now that we are washed up on military business, we are looking forward to knocking something out of the commercial gun business, We have been hounded all year by the powers-that-be and think we are about to give up the ghost so far as the military is concerned, Glad to hear that all of you are taking a hand in the war effort and know it must be ihteresting and gratifying. I hope that you are all able to keep well and be happy. If the inclosed check is not enough, please With love to all, Sincerely, MAB/co/fs let us know, ELSIE BROWNING BALLANTYNE 4409 TALOFA AVENUE NORTH HOLLYWOOD 28, CALIFORNIA Ligela. sea teeta seecone ory — S ( ¥ Ss ; E | . If you wish to have more, all you need do is whistle. Val is at present in the East but should be home shortly. As you know, we have quite a time, not only keeping things going nowadays, but also holding them together. We don’t feel any too optimistic about affairs, but can assure you that you need not worry. Spring appears to be here and all the snow is off the floor of the valley. We have had a pretty hard winter out on the winter range but got through in good shape. Think we had the longest cold spell around Ogden that I have ever known of. If one could get a little California sunshine for a couple of weeks in January, it would do much good, Yes, Louie has had a terrible time, poor girl, and we all hope that the change will benefit her greatly. She is such a fine woman and has had so much trouble--a great deal more than her share. Let us know if there is anything we can do to help out because everyone thinks the world of her. I have been so busy getting ready to leave for the East that I have not had time to reply to your nice letter. I had sent the two checks you requested because I thought you might be wanting them quickly. You spoke of "a hundred or so" for yourself so I sent you two hundred. I have requested Hugh Ford to write you directly concerning your insurance. He has all of the details and said he would write you within a few days. In your letter you say that the insurance dividends were inclosed, but they were not. iI take it that you meant the dividend notices which it is my understanding you left credited to your policies and not paid in cash. However, I may be wrong about this and Hugh will let you know. You have a nice cash balance in the savings bank drawing 2% interest of $24,000.00. I would certainly not think you extravagant if you took two or three thousand of this and had yourself a nice vacation this winter, Elsie Marie has a savings balance of $6,706.00, Bob has $6,640.00 and Beverly has $6,224.00.
