They’ve been convicted of rape and murder. But here they are to- gether, sitting mild-mannered and learning the gospel in a classroom at the Mill Creek Youth Center. Administrators at the facility, however, think the at-risk youth — most of them juveniles — would gain more spirituality if they had a better religious setting, something like a chapel. “We want an environment consistent with the teachings,” said Mill Creek Assistant Superintendent Ken Kashiwaeda. “We’ve had religious services for 18 years, but they’ve always been in one of our classrooms or visiting rooms. ... So the idea came up to build our own chapel and have (the services) in a more spiritual setting.” The problem: Materials for the chapel will cost about $120,000 to $150,000. Through donations, the facility has received about $5,000. Once the funds are in place, the youth, through a vocational class at Mill Creek, will build the chapel in the center at 790 West 12th Street. The state will not let the youth begin construction until all the funds are there. . “It’s important for kids to learn how to build things,” Kashiwaeda said, “and if they build this, it will be more meaningful and it gives back something. If you drive around Ogden and see the graffiti on things, the kids have no investment in them. This is something they’ll take care of because they’ll put See CHAPEL/7C Cha From el 6C their sweat and hard work into it.” Although youth are not required to attend nondenominational services, religion is helpful in developing morals, Kashiwaeda said, especially with kids who have been labeled as “problem children.” Mill Creek, a secure facility, houses the highest risk population of juveniles in the state. Only 10 percent of the 80 youths in the.facility are over 18 years old. “A lot of these kids are surrounded by bad influenc- es outside of here,” Kashi- waeda said. “If you were to interview some of these kids in this setting, you couldn’t believe some of the things these kids have done. They’re so destructive. But after six months in this environment, you can see the change they undergo.” For those interested in contributing to the chapel fund, send a check or money order to the Mill Creek Chapel Fund, 790 West 12th Street, Ogden, Utah, 84404. | The Multi-Cultural Legal Center 205 North 400 West, Salt Lake City, Utah 84103 aL L egal Voice tor (Itah’s Kacial and F thnic Communities” Staff: Executive Director: Su J.
