Weber State University Department continues the 2003-04 season with the serious drama, Racing Demon, by David Hare, directed by Larry Dooley, opening on Friday, March 26th and continuing on the 27th, 30th*, 31st, April 1st, 2nd and 3rd at 7:30 pm in the Eccles Theater, Val A. Browning Center for the Performing Arts. This production is intended for mature audiences. The Tuesday performance, *March 30th, is presented for WSU students only. A WSU student Wildcat card is REQUIRED to be admitted to this performance. No other tickets will be sold at this Tuesday performance. Racing Demon is also a popular British card game where the quick and confident always beat the thoughtful and indecisive. This game serves as a telling metaphor for the quality of leadership that is valued in our culture. This British play examines the lives of several Anglican priests running a parish in a lower working class neighborhood. Each portrays a different approach to their profession and their faith. Although the play is set in England, the personal situations of the individuals reflect the varying relationships of individual participants and institutional organizations. From inner city to inner circles of power, this is a drama about the crisis of faith and loyalty in our institutions. Hare tells this slyly humorous and suspenseful story through four artfully interwoven problems: What will happen to a devoted clergyman (Rev. Lionel Espy) whose religious doubts and political opinions put his future at risk? How to handle a driven, new minister (Rev. Tony Ferris) whose passion to save souls may wreck lives in the process? What to do about a marriage (Heather Espy) wherein the pastoral duties displace the personal? And, finally, what will happen to one of Lionel’s discreet, dedicated colleagues (Rev. Harry Henderson) whom a yellow journalist (Iommy Adair) threatens to ruin with exposure of a controversial secret? Hare makes every character in this vast array a human being, foolish and fallible, but believable and pardonable. I’m certain that these people must exist but they really have little to do with “religion” as most of us experience it. The question for many today is, how does religion matter? Or perhaps, what is the role of an institutional church in society. Even those who define themselves as churchgoers often have a hard time finding connections between daily life and religion. People are deeply aware that ambition, pettiness and even hypocrisy do not cease to exist at the doors of the church, synagogue, temple or mosque. Many will claim, of course, that it only gets worse on the inside. But most of the time, the “inside” and the “outside” seem very much the same, which can be confusing for any of us. Racing Demon is a play for those who want the theatre to address the really big questions. There are “church types” in this play, but mostly they are human beings who represent the many conflicts between institutionalized religion and individual faith. They neither walk on water nor stalk their victims. There is humor and there is serious conflict. The issues are known to all of us: love, sexuality, anger, intrigue, the desire to believe, and the desire to be relevant.
