I am excited about this directory for several reasons. First, this directory may help us to become more connected to one another. In the scripture, the church is described as “the body of Christ”. We would not be much of a body if the hands did not know the feet! This directory might aid us in putting names and faces together. Second, a directory is an historic document. It represents a snapshot of our church at a specific moment in time. If “a picture is worth a thousand words”, then this directory will help our congregation tell its story. It represents another chapter in our church’s history. Finally, this directory will help us to reflect on the year 2000 - the millennium. To the many Services we will plan and have; let us develop that sense of believing and belonging and become who and what God would have us to be. Carter 2935 LINCOLN AVE 601-392-2211 CHURCH GUILT BY FAITH 30262 New Zion Baptist Church History Available records indicate that in 1918 the Utah State Convention purchased a lot on Wall Ave. in Ogden, where the Wall Avenue Church was built and incorporated on February 10th, 1926. Rev. L. A. Platt became the first pastor on October 5, 1930. Rev. B. J. Washington was called to pastor on April 8, 1952. Under his leadership the congregation grew and a larger building was needed. Ground breaking services were held May 16, 1954. Laying of the foundation began November 1954 and the cornerstone was laid on October 1955. First services were held March 25, 1956; dedication services were held on October 26, 1958. New Zion was chosen as the name for the new church building. The anniversary of the first church service is celebrated each year on Palm Sunday, in the form of Church Anniversary Services. Dedication service is celebrated each year on the 4th Sunday in October as Loyalty Day Service. The largest baptism on record is the first Sunday in October 1979, during the pastorate of Rev. N. L. Liggins, when 27 souls were baptized. Rev. James Abrams was called to New Zion on December 1, 1997.
