Show Improving Neonatal Resuscitation Provider Skill Performance BACKGROUND Neonatal resuscitation is a high-acuity, low-occurrence event for EMS providers ,who attend out-of-hospital births. As they do not have additional NRP-trained personnel available to assist during resuscitation they must obtain NRP skill competence. • Current training is inconsistent. • Certification does not equal competence. • Literature indicated that standardized training, including sequential skills practice, simulation-based learning, and reflective debriefing, improves provider competence, team coordination, and neonatal outcomes. 1,2 METHODS Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice (JHNEBP) Model was used by an interdisciplinary team to evaluate the internal and external evidence, including culture and equipment to restructure class using NRP standards and clinical evidence. Adrianne Murdock, BSN, RN, MSN Student Jamie Wankier Randles, EdD, MSN, RN Aimee Jensen, DNP NNP INTERVENTIONS A structured NRP class format was revised to incorporate sequential skills practice aligned with NRP resuscitation guidelines, simulation scenarios specific to out-of-hospital settings, and a structured debriefing. • • • • • • Step 1: Class agenda, scenarios and debriefing questions were written by instructors. Step 2: Pre-class surveys to evaluate student confidence in NRP knowledge and skills Step 3: Instructors to receive Train the Trainer instruction Step 4: NRP classes taught with new class format Step 5: Post-class survey for students and instructors Step 6: Evaluation of Data and continuous project improvement IMPACTS A consistent and structured NRP class format will improve neonatal outcomes and patient safety by 1,2 increasing team members' NRP skills and confidence. • Hands-on skills practiced in an enhanced NRP course improved clinician confidence and competence. 1,2 • Simulations in a realistic setting bridged the gap between theory and practice.3 4 • Simulation enhanced team spirit and cooperation, increasing student self-confidence and skill performance. • Structured debriefing created a supportive learning environment where students identified strengths, 5 addressed knowledge gaps, and improved teamwork and communication. • PowerPoint Presentation for Stakeholders. • Train the Trainer PowerPoint Presentation for NRP Instructors. CONCLUSIONS • Pre and Post-Survey of the NRP Providers' Confidence in NRP Knowledge and Skills. • Pre and Post-Survey of the NRP Instructors’ Confidence in Teaching NRP Knowledge and Skills. • Revised Class Agenda. • Debriefing Questions. This is a significant advancement in improving provider competency and patient outcomes.3,4 • This project underscores the importance of standardization and continuous improvement in healthcare training programs. It will ensure that neonatal resuscitation providers are wellequipped to deliver life-saving interventions and has the potential to meaningfully contribute to nursing education and emergency neonatal care.1,2 |
