Born July 27 1945 in Ogden, UT to Marshall and Glodene Bell White. she was raised and educated in Ogden, graduating from Ogden High Schoo! in 1963, graduated from ] Weber State in a 1988 with a BS degree in Management Logistics. she married Mose Watkins July 17 1965, they later divorced. Tommie was known by her patience and trust in the Lord and was always there to help others with the advice they needed. Her life was a true example of Christianity She was a devout member of New Zion Baptist Church, where she served. as financial secretary youth director, church clerk and many other positions. She devoted a lot of her time to the Lord and the community where she was recognized for her time with the Sojourner Truth Award. Tommie loved her family and friends, she loved being with her grandchildren, who always brought.a smile to her face. She is going to be deeply missed, especially by her family. she is survived by her two children, Nikole Widdison (David), No. Ogden, Dwayne Watkins (Katherine), OR; three sisters, Sammie Ellis, Onieda White, Daphne White Bradley two brothers, Winston White, Ronald White: Hospice team and four beautiful grandchildren, Whitney Timbers and Ajryka Timbers, Moses Watkins, Maurice Watkins and many nieces and nephews. she was preceded in death by her parents; four uncies, Alge, Thomas, Augustus, L T Bell; one aunt, Johnnie B. Sister Benion was a student of the Oakland Public Schools. She attended E. Morris Cox Elementary School, Frick Middle School, and _ Castlemont High School, graduating in 19738. She attended Laney College and Sally’s Cosmetology Schools in Oakland, California, and received her cosmetologist/barber license. Sister Benion accepted Christ at age six at Mt. Emory Baptist Church in Berkeley, California, where she grew to love the Lord. She later moved to Ogden and united with the New Zion Baptist Church. What pleased her most was the birth of her two sons. She enjoyed laughing and playing with them and they equally loved and gravitated to her spirit. Sister Benion was preceded in death by her daughter, Victoria Nicole Jackson, one brother, Don Tate, and one sister, Darlene Tate. Christ has replaced the dark door of death with the shining gate of life.” Whereas, on Wednesday, May 17, 2006, our beloved Brother Chest Burton, Jr., passed into his heavenly existence. We, the Pastor, Officers and Members of the New Zion Baptist Church, in sincerity, do join in this home going of Brother Burton. He was a faithful and devoted servant of God and the Church for approximately 60 years. In the past, he has served graciously by functioning as Chairperson for numerous Church programs and events, volunteered to fulfill the Sexton duties when needed, and supported the Church in various capacities until his illness. Jessie was born 1927 in McCall Creek, Mississippi to proud parents, Andrew and Minnie . Nelson. Jessie moved to Ogden in 1951 from McCall Creek after serving in the U.S. Army during WWII. Jessie started working at HAFB in 1952 where he retired after more than 25 years of service. Jessie went to barber school in the late 60's to become a Master Barber He owned and operated Jessie's Barbershop located in Ogden for 35 years. Jessie's Barbershop served as one of Ogden's landmarks for young and old for many years and will be truly missed. Jessie also owned one of 25th Streets first Disco Clubs for many years. Jessie and his family were members of the New Zion Baptist Church. Jessie enjoyed his community and friends and will be part of Ogdens history He is survived by one son, Thomas Nelson, Sr brothers, Richard Nelson, Theresa Charlie son, Sr Nelson and Ogden; wife, four Layton; and Andrew Warren Cherry Nel- both of McCall Creek, Mis- sissippi son, Nelson, and Mobile, Alabama; children, Thomas his Nelson, Nel- grand- Jr Crystal Nelson of Sacramento, and CA; Dezarae Nelson, Myneshia Nelson and one great-grandchild, Wonzie Lasha and many nieces and nephews; special Dorothy Addie, sisters-in-law, Joyce, Shirley; special friends, S.L. Tom = married Beatrice Lee Mur- phy roan in 1945 Diego, in of Cali- fornia. To this union two daughters were born, Estelle and Pat Johnson. They were later divorced. He married Ruby Lee Jones in Vicksburg, Mississippi. They later divorced. He was a member of Baptist Zion New Church. younger In his years at New Zion he participated as an usher. He was also a member of Mount Ogden Masonic Lodge #20 and Queen of the West Chapter #17, Order of Eastern Star. Following his retirement from the U.S. Navy in 1952, Tom began work at Hill Air Force Base as a civilian, retiring after 34 years of service. Surviving are his daughter Gray and Estelle Loving; Pat former wife Ruby Jones; his lifelong com- panion, Joan Bennett, six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Tom was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters. Vernon was born in Brookhaven, Mississippi on February 24, 1939 to A.J. Kelly and Mattie Mae Hall. After completing her education in the Ogden City School District, mshe married Wayne B. Davis and to this union one son was_ born, Michael Wayne Davis. __, Vernon confessed Christ at an early age. She was a member of New Zion Baptist Church, where she enjoyed singing in the choir. In 1966 her career began with the government at Defense Depot Ogden and later at Hill Air Force Base. She was also employed 10 ears at Cutters Lab, Clearfield Job orps, and F.T.C. group home. ernon was employed at the time gof her death at EG&G at Hill Air Force Base. Vernon's best day was “Sister Day”. A day for shopping and fishing and cooking and spending time ~with her mother. Vernon, it is not over---we will continue in Heaven throughout eternity. Vernon was a member of the Black Women's Society, Sutherman Mae E. Adams Temple #1343 and the Red Hat Honey Bees Society. Surviving are her son, Michael (Anna) Davis, Roy; one grandson, Michael; mother, Mattie M. Carpenter Chairman of Trustees Sunset: November 15, 2005 RESOLUTION For Deaconess Lula May Simpson Christy Whereas, God in His infinite wisdom, has once again visited His garden and plucked a flower, Sister Lula Christy, to add to His Heavenly Bouquet. One writer has said, “one generation succeeds another as wave follows wave,” and so it is that though we mourn the passing of one who has proven herself faithful, loving, and kind, there remains another generation to succeed her and to follow the prints she has made upon the sands of time. We, the Pastor, Officers and Members of the New Zion Baptist Church, in sincerity, do join in this home going of our beloved Sister Christy. She was a faithful and devoted servant of God and the Church for over 50 years. In the past, she has served graciously as a member of the New Zion Baptist Church Choir, Sunday School and Mission Ministries and as a member of the Deaconess Board until her illness. Whereas, we desire to place on record our love and esteem for her life and labor; and in view of her efforts and sincere Christian devotion to advance into the kingdom of our Savior. We thank the Heavenly Father for Sister Christy and wish to express our sympathy to her relatives and friends. Be it resolved, that we do bow in humble submission to the will of God, and commend the bereaved family to Him who sees all and knows every heart; so console yourselves in the hope a reunion, that after life’s remaining ills are past, that is like healing oil to the wounded heart, comforted with pleasing, rather than sad thoughts. Julia was born in Bude, Mississippi, on November 11, 1926 to Hattie Mae Goolsby Brown and Samuel Brown, Sr. She was schoolteacher in Mississippi, then met Richard Nelson and moved to Utah. Julia married Richard on September 20, 1951 in Meadville, Mississippi. a They resided in Layton, Utah and have lived there over 53 years. Julia was was Corporation and later Julia was a devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt and grandmother. Julia had Julia her children. and their three children. Her surviving brothers and sisters include: Samuel a devoted member of New Zion Baptist Church in Ogden for 50 years. employed at Hill Air Force retired while at Futura Corporation.
