Show 24 EIGHTEENTH ANNUAL REPORT Preparatory Course. History of the Church of the present dispensation. Text: Brief History of the Church. Reference: Life of Joseph Smith, Book of Mormon. ACADEMIC COURSE. I. Book of Mormon.The contents of the Book of Mormon are studied in chronological order. Special attention is given to the doctrinal part as well. Text: Book of Mormon. References: Work on Church History, The Story of the Book of Mormon Ready Reference. II. Life of Christ and Apostolic Age.The organization and establishment of the Church of Christ and Ministry of His Apostles. Text: The Bible. Referrence: Standard Church works and Gilbert's "The Student's Life of Jesus." III. Old Testament.Required of all third year students. During the first semester the history of Israel will be traced. Special attention will be given to Old Testament prophecy, the foreshadowings of Christ being taken as the central idea. During the second semester the work of the Old Testament sages will be studied. The books of Proverbs and Job, and the wisdom elements of the prophetical writings will receive careful consideration. IV. Principles of the Gospel.-The principles of the Gospel as taught by our Savior and His Apostles, together with the revelations given on the same through the Prophet Joseph Smith in the last dispensation will be considered. Texts: Bible, Book of Mormon, and Doctrine and Covenants. MISSIONARY COURSE. The following Missionary course is outlined by the Presidency of the Church for the Church schools will be given: I. Principles of the Gospel.-A study of the fundamental principles of the Gospel, using the standard works of the Church as texts. Three hours per week throughout the year. WEBER STAKE ACADEMY 25 II Church History and Book of Mormon.A study of the leading events in the history of the church, including the organization and duties of the various quorums of the priest-hood, the more important revelations to the Church considered in the order of their reception, a brief study of the Book of Mormon and the evidences of its authenticity, general Church information, and training in the administration of gospel ordinances. Five hours per week throughout the year. English Grammar. III. Special attention will be given to sentence structure, and to composition work. Effort will be made continually to correct improper habits of speech. A critical study of at least one selection from a standard author will be included in the course. Buehler's Practical Exercise in English, with a suit-able high school Grammar. Five hours per week throughout the year. IV. SingingPractice in part signing, the object being to acquaint the young men with the most useful and popular missionary hymns. In this course the Y. M. M. I. A. and Missionary song book is used. Two hours per week throughout the year. In connection with Courses 1 and 2, special attention will be given to testimony bearing, and to extemporaneous speaking on the principles of the Gospel. MUSIC. Regular Course. This course will include the principles of sight reading, mixed and male chorus work. The sight reading course will be a progressive arrangement of studies commencing with exercises based upon the simple harmonic combination to be found in the major and minor scales, and continuing through easy stages to the more difficult. In both chorus classes special attention will be given to artistic singing as applied to chorus work. |
