SOLID.Required of third year students in the Classical course. Lines and planes in space, polyhedrons, cylinders, cones, sphere and the conic sections. Four hours per week during the first half year. Wentworth's Plane and Solid Geometry, Revised. TRIGONOMETRY.Open as an elective. The trigonometrical functions, general formula of plane and spherical trigonometry, solution of plane spherical triangles, practice in the use of logarithmic tables. Five hours per week during the first half year. Well's Plane and Spherical Trigonometry. HISTORY AND POLITICAL SCIENCE. The courses in history and political science extending through several years, give the student a good idea of general history and government. In each course the text is followed to give the student the thread of historical events, and a supplementary work is used to give a deeper insight into special phases of development. Considerable library work is required which is made the basis of class discussion, and of written work. Two long themes are required during the year, on subjects assigned for special work. HISTORY OF THE ORIENT AND GREECERequired of second year students in the Classical Course. A general survey of Oriental nations, with special reference to their contribution to Western civilization; the development of the Athenian constitution and the institutions of Sparta; the city-state, with reasons for its development; Athenian culture will be studied as the highest type of Grecian civilization; the contact with the East, and the spread of Hellenism. Three hours per week first half year. First half of West's Ancient World, and Tarbell's History of Greek Art supplementary. ROMAN HISTORYRequired of second year students in the Classical Course. Primitive Italy, the beginnings of Rome, the monarchy, the aristocracy, and the republic; the empire, the introduction of Christianity, and the invasions of the bar- WEBER STAKE ACADEMY 39 barians. Special attention will be given to the political history and to the development of Roman law. Three hours per week second half year. Second half of West's Ancient World, and Hadley's Introduction to Roman Law supplementary. ENGLISH HISTORYRequired of third year students in the Classical Course. Early England, the conquests by the Germanic tribes, the decline of feudalism, the Renaissance and Reformation in England, the constitutional development, and the growth of democracy will be considered. Two hours per week throughout the year. Larned's History of England, and Montague's Elements of English Constitutional History supplementary. UNITED STATES HISTORYRequired of third year students in the Normal Course, and fourth year students in the Classical Course. The period of discovery and exploration, the Revolutionary war, the formation of the Nation, the constitutional and industrial development will be considered. Five hours per week first half year. Larned's History of the United States, and Hindal's the American Government. CIVIL GOVERNMENTRequired of third year students in the Normal Course, and fourth year students in the Classical Course. The course consists of the study of the historical development of American institutions: a careful analysis of our government, national and local; and a discussion of present problems and policies. Five hours per week second half year. Hindale's the American Government, and Bryce's American Commonwealth (abridged) supplementary. MODERN HISTORYRequired of fourth year students in the Normal Course. The Holy Roman Empire, the Crusades, the feudel system, the reformation, political revolutions, and the growth of ideas of religious liberty and political rights.
