Ruth Scowcroft Four Walls Barbara Sprague Four walls have sheltered me these years, Have known my secret hopes and fears, Have fostered deep in me The love of all beauty. These walls have windows too their eyes That saw for me, the trees and skies. They guard my thoughts for me With owner's jealousy. They hold as prisoner bound, my works; In every nook remembrance lurks; My soul in theirs entwined, My efforts there confined. SULTRY WIND swept over the gray sage covered land. A chickadee chirped sleepily from the mesquite bush, a drowsy rattler coiled close to the butt of a large sage. Floating down the evening breeze came the faint wail of a coyote, accompanied by the whir of wings on the night air as all nature settled down for its peaceful slumber. The golden sun was just kissing the tops of the majestic mountains, when a lone horseman appeared on the mesa far to the south. His build was not of the city type, but rather that of an out-door man, lithe and well knit, with smooth face, bronzed by the sun, deep blue eyes, and a mop of coal black hair. He rode slowly, enjoying the beautiful scene before him, and did not notice a rider approaching from the opposite direction until a cheery voice greeted him with a "Good morning, stranger", and he looked up to behold a young lady smiling upon him with all the cheerfulness of the golden sun. He sat as if dazed, but finally roused himself, removed his hat, and answered in a clear, friendly tone, "Good morning. I was just admiring the glorious sunrise the west affords you." As they rode along together the sun reached the mountain tops and all the valley was flooded with a gleaming shafting light. The young man admired his companion because of the ease with which she rode. The supple lines of her body, the fine cut features of her face, her blue eyes, and her golden hair gleaming in the sunlight made a charming picture. Suddenly he startled her by saying, "You ride the easiest of any young lady I have ever seen, Miss-" "Dale," she supplied. "Oh, are you from the Dale Ranch? Why, that is where I am going, to look over the site for the new reservior. Steele is my name; I am the engineer." And so, since they had become acquainted with each other, the ride became more interesting and it seemed only a short 15 |
