Show Samuel Carter 13 Samuel Carter was born September 1, 1836 at Wordington , Osfordshire, England. His parents were John and Mary Tims Carter. He was baptised into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints October 1, 1851 by EIder John Jaques, ordained an Elder in 1856 and traveled in the ministry in Staffordshire and other Conferences for four years. in 1859 he met and married Ellen Masser. On the 11th of May 1860 he sailed for Utah on the Wm. Tapscott, crossing the plains. soon after. while crossing the plains his eldest child was born, a tiny little daughter being premature. Both mother and babe were very low but through faith and prayers of those around them the life of both were spared. They reached the valley on sept. 25. He located at Kaysville, Davis County. in the spring of 1861 he married Sarah Davis Roberts. These two wives were true ana faithful to each other and their husband through all the trials and hard¬ships with plural marriage. They were like sisters all through their lives. In 1865 he moved his families to Round Valley, Morgan county, presiding over that branch for a a short time. In 1873 he moved to Porterville. Nov. 18, 1877 he was chosen councilor to Bishop Thomas Brough. This office he held until he was appointed Bishop of the Porterville ward Feb. 18, 1833. This position he filled most honorably till Aug. 22, 1897 when he was released away to consolidation of his ward and another in 1887. During the raid he was imprisoned ana paid a fine of 300.00 which he preferred to uo rather than desert his family. Up to the time of his last illness he lavored diligently in every position to which he had been called. He was a good husband, kind father and a true Latter-Day Saint was the father of 24 children. He died June 21, 1898. |
