Show COLLEGE/Adelmann broad knowledge, understanding, tolerance and acceptance of the world throughout the long history of man. We must begin to prepare our young artists for a secure career in their chosen field. We must prepare them not only for Ogden, but also for New York, Los Angeles, Rome, Munich indeed, for the whole world. Some will choose to do graduate work elsewhere and they should in that case, be equipped for success not failure. The growth of Utah will require young people to leave here to learn those things and acquire those skills which are not yet offered here but which are needed and then return here to contribute to their communities. Others will prefer to live elsewhere. Utah schools must prepare them too, for a successful future. As things stand presently at Weber, I seriously doubt whether we could send any of our graduate art majors to important cities in the country and have them be able to start careers in commercial art, designing, gallery and museum work, teaching, etc. We need a greatly expanded program and greater facilities (including a larger staff). As yet the visual arts building does not even include a storeroom. Vast storage space is required for supplies and for a permanent collection of props, and artworks (student, faculty and those acquired elsewhere). Before this year our gallery did not even have a mailing list to realize its potentially vital role in the community. This year we hope through the creation of an Art Student's League, and through the regular publicity of gallery shows (to include shows of the visual arts and also concerts, lectures, films and dramatic productions) to inspire greater community participation in our program, and to provide more realistic orientation for Weber State art students. We cannot afford to pine away in an ivory tower for four more good years. Too many art students do not even know why they are here or what the prospects and demands are for future careers in the arts. It is hoped that we will be able to enliven our visual arts program to bring it up to the level, stature and community participation now enjoyed by the performing arts, music, dance and drama at Weber State. We hope to soon be able to open our facilities for the weekend, so that the community can use its leisure time to view our gallery exhibits and perhaps to enjoy a chamber concert or recital while doing so. It is hoped that in the future it will be possible to offer a richer, more vital, and more varied range of art works including the regular and frequent showing of student work, to facilitate a deeper and richer understanding and association with the arts. It is past time to provide the basic skills necessary for the successful implementation of music, art and literature into our communities, school system, and students. 12 MY FRIZBY POEM/Katzi Kurtz *FRIZBY FLEW HIGH (and came running back after seconds) FRIZBY, POOR OLE FRIZBY, GOT, (so is) FAT. hmmm ....
