Show The Weber Literary Journal "Come to you?" I sneered, "Bah-h-h! I think more of what my mother has told me about you." At this, Miss Parker ordered him to register peevishness. He did, as he growled, "Your Mother, your rip-snortin' ol' lady! Her an' all her lies have poisoned you against me. Her, the ol' drug fiend, drunkin', devilish hussey! Well, goodbye forever," he added painfully. He is really right because my mother is supposed to be a regular she-devil. I looked just in time to see Hugh get ready to fling himself down over the rocks (chairs). So I ran and pleaded my love and he forgave me. That is just about all this time. With love. Sue. March 7th. Dear Mother and all, Mystery, suspense and horror begins. Oh, mother! I was chased so long by Bill Bellhounds, today, I am actually weak. The dirty scoundrel robbed me, then I started to fight. The brute attacked me with such force, it actually made Miss Parker gasp and, mind you, I had to fight for my life. At first I was just sitting there as quiet and nice as could be when someone entered the room; he was masked. After his commanding me to hand over everything of value in the house I positively refused. Then he chased me, caught me and forced me to fight for dear life. With lots of love. Suzanne. P. S. I don't think much of Ernie anymore but I guess he is all right. Greenville, March 9th. Daughter Sue, I feel it my duty, as a father, to write, though my conscience bids me not. I couldn't answer your other letter with- 28 The Weber Literary Journal out boiling over with rage. Girl, haven't you a conscience left? Your mother and I are completely exhausted. Our patience is given out. In your foolishness how could you talk of your mother so? The woman that has slaved all her life for you young uns and have her own daughter admit that she was a she-devil. I don't understand it, I am sure, but I am fully decided that you have gone mad. If I would once come up there I would kill that fresh Hugh Naylor as well as that dirty criminal with whom you are so intimate, Bill Bellhounds. That Parker hussey ought to be behind the bars long ago for allowing such goings on. When you were attacked why didn't you call the police? Have you lost your sense, too? If you knew Bill Bellhounds to be the culprit why didn't you have him arrested? And, as to that scandalous love affair. One more word of it and Ernie Hicks will hear about it and you know the consequences. Your disappointed Father. P. S. Remember: any more of this and you come home. March 11th. Dear Father, Mother and all, Oh father, I know you don't mean what you say. It is because your enthusiasm is worked all up to such a pitch. Now father, isnt' that about right? I'm so glad you take so much interest in our doings. You even knew the police ought to have been there when I was attacked. But father, don't worry: the police will come when it is time. Jack Sawyer, Bud Chapman and Leland Fink are the police, and they will come the minute Miss Parker calls them. But father, you don't know. My mother is a roughneck. Not only that, but she is a crook and a robber as well as a drug fiend. My father is worse. He is a murderer with blood staining his hands. I hope you understand the situation a little clearer now. With love. Daughter Sue. 29 |
