Mi others f Standard-Examiner of year to be honored Saturday : staff ‘ ~ OGDEN — The Ogden City and Webcr County mothers of the year for 1995 will be honored Saturday at a noon luncheon at the Ogden Golf & Country Club. Ogden City Mother of the Year Sophie Reed Richards volunteered as a Girl Scouts leader, day camp director, dance director and cookie chairwoman for 35 years. She also worked as a secretary in charge of camping and supplies for the Boy Scouts for 12 years. After retiring from the Boy Scouts, she returned to Weber State University where she received a bachelor’s degree in integrated stud- tes in 1993, Richards is a member of the Og- den Drama Club and the Coronet Club. She is a sustaining member of the Junior League of Ogden. Weber County Mother of the Year Wanda G. Chatelain is a teacher, LDS Church visiting teachcr and organist for the LDS Relief Society. Richards Richards is Emeritus Chatclain also is the secretary of the board of trustees of Northview Senior Citizen Center. She worked at Roy and Weber high schools, Wahlquist Junior High School, and in the Weber School District offices. Chatelain a member of the WSU Alumni the Weber County Board at Heritage Foun- dation Board and the Utah Musical Theater Board. She has five children, Sheree R. Reed, Reed M. Richards. Brett a: Richards, Tina R. Herman and Teri L. Richards. ———— Barbara Marie Scowcroft Caine A loving and generous woman, Barbara Marie Caine Scowcroft, died at home August. 16, 1996. She fought bravely and tenaciously against cancer. She was born in Logan, Utah, Octoher..9, 1922 to Gladys. Wright Smith and Arthur Hugh Caine. She was the first woman to serve on the Utah Hotel Corporation Board of Directors. She was active in Junior League, Classics Club, the Ogden Drama Club, and many other clubs, guilds, and organizations. She was a recipient of the Emeritus Alumni Association Merit of ‘Honor Award of the University of Utah. Barbara is survived by her husband and her four children: Charlene (Paul 4.) Matthews, Salt Lake City; John Arthur (Carolee Clawson) Scowcroft, New York City; Barbara Ann (Ralph T.) Matson, Salt Lake City; and Sally Gaine (Gregory S.) Rogers, Albuquer- que. She loved her seven grandchil‘dren, Sam and Sally; Sylvie and John; ‘Samantha, Rebecca, and Madeline. She is also survived by her sister and two brothers, Helen C. Schlofman, Boise, Idaho; A. Dixon (Pat) Caine, Great Falls, Virginia; and Thomas H. (Mary Ellen) Caine, Salt Lake City. Richards rgaret Evans itzman OMAHA Nebraska - Long time Ogden resident Margaret Evans Zitzman passed away Thursday April 3, 1997 at the home of her daughter Joan Schooff in Omaha. moved from Ogden to Omaha in 1992 to be with her family. She was born on June 14. 1910, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the daughter of George Foster Evans and Susannah Lake Hull. She graduated from the University of Nebraska Margaret : es § § 14, 1935, she married James Rex Kennard, who died January 1, 1938. shortly before the birth of their daughter, Joan On May 20 1941. Margaret married Lewis Henry Zitzman who died on July 13, 1985 Two sons. Lewis Henry and David Evans, were born to Margaret and Henry. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in youth organizations for several years. She taught the Sunday School class to the single adults and was a Relief Society teacher in her Ogden ward for many years. While in Omaha, she taught in the Relief Society in the Plattsmouth Ward. Lincoln Nebraska Stake. Margaret was a member of the Og- den Drama Club and actively participated in the Club's presentations and other activities. She was a charter member of the College Womens Club of Ogden. Margaret was active in community affairs. She was instrumental in the movement to change the form of city government for Ogden from mayor and two commissioners to city council and city manager government. Her sister, Phyllis Evans Kesler, preceded her in death. She ts survived by her brother, George Foster Evans, of Los Alamos, New Mexico; ner daughter, Joan Schooff. of Omaha, Nebraska, her sons, Lewis Henry Zitzman of Laurel, Maryland: and David Evans Zitzman of Norton, Ohio. ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was born November 19, 1922 in Ogden, Utah, a daughter BR ies ees of Sophie and Harry S. Reed. She was. married to Maurice Richards from 1943 to 1978. She was a ployee of the Trapper Trails Council of the Boy Scouts of America for many years. She was a sustaining member of the Jr. League of Ogden. She was also a member of the Utah Musical Theater Board and the Weber County Heritage Foundation. She served Utah with a de- Latics gree in speech and drama. On October OGDEN as president of the fol- lowing organizations: Drama Club of Ogden, Coronet Club, and the Emeritus Council of Weber State University. She had been involved with youth her entire life and had served: in both Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. She was a Girl Scout leader for over 20 years many of those years leading several troops at the same time. She touched the hearts and lives of many young girls. She also served in the Boy Scouts as Troop Advancement Com- _mittee Chairman for many years and received The District Award of Merit from the Mount Ogden District of the Boy Scouts of America. She started dancing at the age of three, taught by her mother of the Reed School of Dance. She was an accomplished tap, ballet and toe dancer throughout her young life. She shared her love for dance with hér daughters and granddaughters. She loved to travel throughout the world with her friends and family. She always looked forward to spending time alone traveling in Europe with each of her grandchildren as they _ graduated from high school. She graduated Magna Cum Laud with a Bachelors Degree in Integrated Studies from Weber State University at the age of 70. She was the oldest member of the Young Alumni Association. 7 Her family meant everything to her. In 1995, she was named the Ogden Mother of the Year. She was the center of many memories to her family and her extended family. We will always remember the Easter Egg hunts, the Christmas traditions, her pies and her homemade ice cream. Her service and _ love that she gave so freely to everyone. _ Surviving are her children: Sheree (Stan) Reed of Sandy; Reed (Martha) Richards, Brett (Rebecca) Richards, Tina (Robert) Herman, and Teri Richards all of Ogden. Willie OGDEN—Thelma Gazelle Malin Willie, almost 90, died Monday, January 16, 1995, at the Mc- fg ha Hospital following a short illness. She was born February 22, 1905 in Hoyftsville, Summit County, Utah, the eldest child of Edmund LeRoy and Cornelia Gunn Malin. She was reared and educated in Summit County and Salt Lake City, mong to Ogden in 1924. She married Leon G. Willie for eternity in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on June 30, 1926. They owned and operated a beautiful fruit orchard on 12th Street for 45 years. He passed away March 5, 19814. Thelma was an active member of the LDS Ogden 24st Ward for 63 years, serving in Sunday School, MIA, Relief Society, drama and music. She had been an Ogden temple worker. She was a member of the Drama Club of Ogden, Daughters of Utah Pioneers, and Fi-Wo-Ka Literary Club. She had been a member of the Ogden Symphonic Choir and the Ogden Community Theater, participating in many local and state theatrical productions. Her life-long love of music, drama and litera- ture has left a legacy of memories in the hearts of her loving family and friends. They are particularly proud of her continued desire to further her knowledge and education. At 85, she attended Weber State University, studying music theory and composition. She loved to travel, was an avid gardener- specializing in beautiful roses and iris, and was noted for her delicious Christmas hand-dipped chocolates. She worked for 22 years in the Procurement Department at Defense Depot Ogden, retiring in 1964. She had a unique capacity for acceptin and loving all those she knew. Her wisdom an love will be missed. | She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; two brothers and one sister. She is survived by three children, Dr. L. Garth ai per Willie of North Ogden; Marilyn (Ramon) aird of Boulder, Colo.; and Beth Hamad: Johnson of South Ogden; 10 grandchildren; 25 greatgrandchildren; and one great-great-grandChild; two sisters, Cathryn Grasteit of Fallon, Nev.; and LaRee Simonsen of Roy; one brother, Paul Malin of Wendover, Utah.
