Image Captions William H. Wattis, president of the Utah Construction Company and then of Six Companies, led the bid effort from a hospital bed in San Francisco. Although Wattis swore he would beat cancer and then head for the dam site, he lost his health battle and succumbed in September 1932, shortly after work in Black Canyon began.
