MOTHER'S DAY Mother’s Day is set apart every year in honor of motherhood. On the second Sunday in May, many families and churches make a special point of honoring mothers. Many people follow the custom of wearing a carnation on Mother’s Day. A colored carnation means that a person’s mother is living. A white carnation indicates that a person’s mother is dead. A day of honoring mothers was observed many years ago in England. It was called Mothering Sunday, and came in midLent. The Yugoslavs and people in some other countries have long observed similar days. Julia Ward Howe made the first Known suggestion for a Mother’s Day in the United States in 1872. She suggested that people observe a Mother’s Day on June 2 as a day dedicated to peace. For several years she held an annual Mother's Day meeting in Boston. Mary Towles Sasseen, a Kentucky schoolteacher, started conducting Mother’s Day celebrations in 1887. Frank E. Hering of South Bend, Indiana launched a campaign for the observance of Mother's Day in 1904. Three years later, Anna Jarvis of Grafton, W. Va., and Philadelphia, began a campaign for a nationwide observance of Mother’s Day. She chose the second Sunday in May and began the custom of wearing a carnation. On May 10, 1908, churches in Grafton and Philadelphia held Mother's Day celebrations. The service at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton honored the memory of Anna Jarvis’ own mother, Mrs. Anna Reeves Jarvis. At the General Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Minneapolis, Minn., in 1912, a delegate from Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church introduced a_ resolution recognizing Anna Jarvis as the founder of Mother’s Day. It also suggested that the second Sunday in May be observed as Mother's Day. MOTHER'S DAY Mother’s Day is set apart every year in honor of motherhood. For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. He who believes in the Son has eterna! life; he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God rests upon him. Truly, truly, | say to you, he who hears My word and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life; he does into judgment, death to life. but has not come passed from My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me: and | vive has given them to Me, them eternal life, and they shall never ~ perish, and no one shall snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. This is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who has not the Son of God has not life. I write this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life. We know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, to know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testa- ment in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. Genesis 27:6-8, 15-27 Place: Beer-sheba Golden Text: "Thy brother came with subtilty, and hath taken away thy blessing" (Genesis 27:35) Today’s Aim Facts: to examine the use of deceit by Jacob. Principle: to teach that using deception is wrong and always leads to additional sins. Application: to encourage believers to always be truthful. Practical Points 1. We need to remember that God will finish His plan according to His time schedule (Genesis 27:6). 2. Family rivalries left unchecked often lead to manipulation and deception (vss. 7-8). 3. It is possible to deceive the membersof our own family, but it is impossible to deceive God, who sees and knows all things (Gen 27:18-22; Galatians 6:7). 4. We should be well established in the Word of God so that we can detect that which is evil and that which is good (Gen.27:2324). | | Insights 1. We must face the fact that God deceive and use people. deceivers. 2. never encourages us to he does not call us to be schemers and He calls us to be imitators of Jesus Christ. We are called to follow Christ’s example of serving and not selfishly using others. As Christ accepted the Father’s will for Him, so we are to accept the Father’s will for our lives. It is our sincere desire that this service worship will prove to be a blessing to you. of Here, we have no creed but Christ, no purpose except to serve the needs of any who come our way as best we can in the name of the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We believe that every follower of Christ can and should interpret, assume and practice the love of God in his own life. We do not believe that differences of opinions have a place in breaking the fellowship of Christians. We turn to our Bible as the source of our practices and teachings. We strive to catch the spirit of Christ’s teachings as they are revealed in the words of God and apply them with common sense to our own day. WE BELIEVE that the religion of Jesus Christ makes each one of us a servant to the best that is in life. We believe that the religion of Jesus Christ is a happy one. We believe it is better to love than to hate. Therefore, we welcome you joyously to this worship service. We sincerely pray that God’s richest blessings may be upon you. You have blessed us by your presence today. WE AFFILIATED ARE with the Intermountain General Baptist Association and the National Baptist Convention USA, Inc. Our operational budget is subscribed by the tithes and free will offerings of the members and friends. —, If you are seeking a Church Home, you are cordially invited to become a part of this fellowship. Membership may be obtained from another Baptist Church, through letter, confession of Christian experience, and candidate for water baptism, for those who have never confessed their hope in Christ. It is our sincere desire that this service of worship will prove to be a blessing to you. Here, we have no creed but Christ, no purpose except to serve the needs of any who come our way as best we can in the name of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. We believe that every follower of Christ can and should interpret, assume, and practice the love of God in his own life. We do not believe that differences of opinion have a place in breaking the fellowship of Christians. We turn to our Bible as the source of our practices and teachings. We strive to catch the spirit of Christ's teachings as they are revealed in the words of God and apply them with common sense to our own day. WE BELIEVE that the religion of Jesus Christ makes each one of us a servant to the best that is in life. We believe that the religion of Jesus Christ is a happy one. We believe it is better to love than to hate. Therefore,we welcome you joyously to this worship service. We sincerely pray that God’s richest blessings may be upon you. You have blessed us by your presence. WE ARE AFFILIATED with the Intermountain General Baptist Association of Churches, Inc. and the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. Our operational budget is subscribed by the tithes and free will offerings of our members and friends. If you are seeking a Church Home, you are cordially invited to become a part of this fellowship. Membership may be obtained through letter from another Baptist Church; by confession of Christian experience; and as a candidate for water baptism for those who have never confessed their hope in Christ.
