Steve J. Griffin of the Little Zion Baptist Church. She attended L. B. Landry High School of New Orleans, LA and later moved to Sacramento, CA in August 1958. She has been employed with McClellan Air Force Base for 30 years and is presently working as an Electronics Worker. Kosalee attended Trinity Schoo! of the Bible on a part-time basis and was certified in Teaching Techniques. She was deeply aware of the Master’s calling as in Matthew 28:19-20, so she began to go, and because of His calling, she began to grow. Asa result of going and growing, she is now glowing. Rose, as she is affectionately known, attended several churches before uniting with New Testament Baptist Church and has been a member since its inception, under the leadership of Rev. C. M. Cummings. She presently serves as Youth Director, Adult sunday School Teacher, a member of Choir #1 and Spiritual Advisor to Choir #2. Rose, @ mother of four and grandmother of three, also teaches at retreats, workshops and community affairs. You may also find her speaking at prayer breakfasts, Women’s Day programs, mission programs, as well as youth programs. Kose’s motto is “Go Tell” and her favorite scripture is Psalm 27. Read — James 1:1-18 Let’s look at some ways to respond with a positive attitude toward trials 3 KEYS TO HAVING A GOOD ATTITUDE NOT A BAD ATTITUDE 1. CHOOSE TO HAVE A JOYFUL HEART (James 1:2-4) A. Trials will come into your life. It’s not a choice of if, but when they will come. B. We can rejoice because: 1. Trials are opportunities for growth in faith and trust; 2. We know we will be stronger after the trial for future battles (refer to verse 4) 3. We know that God is at work in our lives. He uses our trails to strengthen and mature us. Why does God allow people to go through trials and tough times? How does a person’s relationship with God change as he or she goes through trials and problems? How can you choose to have a joyful heart? What would you tell a friend who is going through a trial right now? COME TO GOD FOR STRENGTH (James 1:5-8) A. God will strengthen you when you ask him to. B. We need to ask continually for: 1. Strength —- to continue under the trial 2. Wisdom - not to miss opportunities with the trials 3. Perspective - to see trials through his eyes rf What does verse mean? What effect does doubt have on a person when he or she prays? When do you find it hardest to pray? With what doubts have you struggled concerning God and prayer? How can a person seek God for strength? Wisdom? J. Perspective? CHASE AFTER THE CROWN (James 1:12) A. The key to making it through trials is to look at the finish line, the goal, the prize. B. If we keep our eyes on the goal, we will make it through trials with style. C. Focus your eyes on Jesus Christ and what's He’s doing in your life through the trial. What reward waits for the person who perseveres under trials? What is the goal that we should be focused on? What takes our focus off the goal during trials? How can we regain our focus in the midst of trials? Women’s Retreat Facilitator — Sis. Rose Charley TOPIC “WHERE IS GOD WHEN IT HURTS?” KEY VERSE James 1:2-4 - “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trails of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” BACKGROUND SCRIPTURE Romans 5:1-5: James 1:1-18: James 5:5:10,11: 1st Peter 1:3-9: STUDY FOCUS @ Examine the issue of trails in the life of the believer ® Discover how God use trails to bring maturity into the life of the believer @ {implement an attitude of thankfulness, faith and trust toward trails in their personal lives IN THE WORD All of us go through times and trials in our lives. No one is exempt! Our attitudes affect how we handle or react to tough times in our lives. We can respond by: Running Away - trying to ignore them, going in the opposite direction Running Around - trying to hide from them, or trying to sidestep them altogether Running Ahead — taking them on, enduring them with the proper attitude FOR DISCUSSION What is one trail you have faced in the past month? How did you react during that trail? Refer to the four R’s Spiritual Rebounding: Bouncing back from Life’s Failures It doesn’t matter what shot you missed if you will turn aside and come to grips with God in a new way. I. Rebounding from rejection: Exodus 2:11-13. II. A Exodus iI. God’s Perspective: world that’s crumbling: 2:13 (It’s one thing to miss a shot or two) Exodus 2:25, 3:1-3 IV. A New Vision of God: V. Ready forthe Rebound: Closing Look in Your Hands What is in your hands? (God wants us to know, I’m in charge here. You are on holy ground. This is my territory.) Exodus 3:8,10 (Exodus 4:1-4) 1. What do you think God is trying to teach you through the trials and situations that you are facing? 2. In what areas do you need to ask God for his wisdom? 3. What temptations do you need God's help? CHALLENGE YOURSELF What can we do as a group to help one another keep focused on the goal? Close with prayer for one another and for the trials that each of you are facing. Prayers Gan? Be Answered Unlass a Life without purpose is barren indeed, There can't be a harvest unless you plant a seed There can't be attainment unless there's a goal, And man's but a robot unless there's a soul. If we send no ships out, no ships will come in, And unless there's a contest, nobody can win. Games can't be won unless they are played, And prayers can't be answered unless they are prayed. _ So whatever is wrong with your life today, You'll find a solution if you kneel down and pray. Not just for pleasure, enjoyment and health, - Not just for honors and prestige and wealth. But pray for a purpose to make life worth living, And pray for the joy of unselfish giving. For great is your gladness and rich your reward, When you make your life's purpose the choice of the Lord.
