Moroni Olsen was involved in several phases of theater during his lifetime and his activities are an index to what has happened. He started his career after World War I at the time when the so-called legitimate houses were having their fight for existence against motion pictures. One of his early professional ventures was not with a commercial producer, but with a pro- | fessional college troupe, one of the first such in whe country and without doubt unique. Organized in 1918 University of Utah’s “Varsity Players” the was ‘The ia ; : under: the direction of Maud May What made the “Varsity Players” a. Babcock, organized in 1918. unique was their subsidy by community, church, and state. The LDS Church gave the com- ' pany use of Social Hall (the first little theater built in the U.S.). * - The University of Utah Speech Department used the company for training young actors, and thus paid part of the sal- aries of the director and leading actors who served as instructors. Although the Varsity Players: venture was an artistic - success, it folded after three years of valiant effort because _ the Social Hall was too small a house to sustain expenses, and - because the public was too interested in the newest theater art form, motion pictures. I have been told that Maud May - Babcock ‘personally paid off the debts of the Social Hall ven_ ture, even though it took several years. ' Formed Own Company | After the Social Hall folded, Moroni Olsen tried several enterprises. He formed his own company, the Moroni Olsen aes players and toured ‘all over the West. Moroni Olsen then made a career for himself in motion pictures and was considered one of the finest character actors in Hollywood. He played on Broadway with some of the stage‘s most distinguished stars, including Helen Hayes. He also served for a time as the director of the Powers » Moroni oppor- ~ School of Acting in Boston. 3 . - - Olsen’s death makes us reflect on theater tunities in Salt Lake today. Gone are the stock companies and the Social Hall and in their place is the Summer Festival, and promise of a professional University Theater. Gone is Me feasibility of a touring repertory company, and in its place are*the various University Theaters’ touring shows. _ Change in Theater But Higatee hasn’t disappeared. It has changed. Instead of touring the West, and play parts in The artists such as Lila Eccles Brimhall University Theater productions. iaee U. has organized its theater to serve the needs of he eommunity which the stock.company of yesteryear performed. And were Mr. Olsen to commence his career today instead of ending it, he could look forward to the possibility of performing a ‘dramatic literature which would be a unique aspect of _the West's theater. i | | i ‘g|qD|IOAD i «dnoib % ol sanbpoid Avp-8 “WI andwy gama OOIs peyiod 4 "udljoa||O> | up wod} uoljonp enbijuy -0109y uv € cae 42°19 LI sep eee Bul © axoW sa2u0rg }uaw -2couw Pulm-}UO4} oamng Ped ee ee caahickoh, (ae f y Ot "-g ¢:0:0:4, mene eterafestate 0,00aterer tonsyeetsten ste ‘eee cent * 2 fete e esentien’ ‘Salateee nentctet e os0Vs 3 soyorem puourelp J ssi - - Moroni Olsen, noted Hollywood actor who was slated to direct “Trelawnyof the Wells” for its | mid-December opening at the Pasadena Playhouse, was found dead in his apartment yesterday morning in the Parklabrea Tow- | ers in Los Angeles. | | Olsen’s body was discovered by a Playhouse associate after Olsen failed to report for week-end re- Aearsais.: _ One of -_ Moron!
