The church was incorporated on February 10, 1926. On October 5, 1930, First Pastor the Rev. L.A. Platt of Ontario, first Pastor of the Wall Avenue Baptist Church. California became He pastured for six years. the Rev. B.J. Washington was called to Pastor New Zion on April 8, 1952 and under his leadership the Congregation grew into the need of a new church building. Through this effort, Wall Avenue Baptist became New Zion Baptist Church. Rev. Washington pastured at New Zion for ten years. The Church Grows Ground Breaking Services Laying of Foundation Laying of Cornerstone | First Church Services May 16, 1954 November 1954 October 31, 1954 March 25, 1956 Dedication Services October 26, 1958 The anniversary of the first church service is celebrated each year on Palm Sunday in the form of Church Anniversary Services and the dedication service is celebrated each year on the 4" Sunday in October in the form of Loyalty Day Service. Souls Are Saved The largest baptism on record is the first Sunday in October 1979, during the pastorate of Rev. Dr. N.L. Liggins, when 27 converts were baptized. Present Leadership Reverend James Abrams was called to New Zion in December 1997 and New Zion continues to lift up the name of Jesus. Pastor Abrams has accepted the tremendous responsibility of becoming the shepherd of this church. He is one of God’s Knights; he wears spiritual armor. He has the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and his sermons come from the heart. He preaches God’s word with energy and zeal. He always points us to God and tells us of His love and we have continued in spiritual growth. Corey J. Hodges Pastor Corey J. Hodges was born on December 14, 1970 and is a native of St. Petersburg, Florida. He is married to the former Ms. Benita Newkirk also of St. Petersburg, FL. Together, they have three sons, Quentin Lamar Hodges, Cameron Steven Pastor Hodges is the Hodges, and Audrey Jamir Hodges. Senior Pastor of New Pilgrim Baptist Church in Salt Lake City, Utah. Since his call there on February church has grown tremendously. 22, 1998 (5 years), the New Pilgrim has become one of the leading churches here in the state of Utah. Pastor Hodges presently serves on the Board of Directors of the National Baptist Convention USA, Inc., and holds the position as President of the Intermountain General Baptist Convention, Inc. Prior to patronage at New Pilgrim Baptist Church, he served as the Minister of Christian Education and Evangelism at the Bethel Metropolitan Baptist Church in St. Petersburg, : Florida. He was a student at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, where he Pastor Hodges is majored in Religious Studies and Music. currently a student at Trinity Theological Seminary. He was appointed by the Governor of Utah, The Honorable Michael O. Leavitt, in 2000 to sit on the Olene Walker Board of Economic Development for Utah.
