Lillie Holman, Secretary New Zion Baptist Church www.nzbcut.org "And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men." ~ Colossians 3:23 Our Church History Beginning 1916 to March 20, 2016 The Wall Avenue Baptist Church was organized in Ogden, Utah as a mission in 1916. The red brick bungalow style chapel with a small steeple erected in 1918 and dedicated in May 1919. This building was purchased by the Utah Baptist State Convention and seated 100 people and was located at 2701 Wall Avenue. At a meeting on December 23, 1925, it was decided to incorporate the organization for a period of 100 years. Bro. James E. Moore was chairman of this meeting and the following officers were elected: Bro. O. H. Parry, President; Sis. Nellie Hamilton, Secretary; Sis. Florida Robinson, Vice-President; and Sis. Bernice Johnson, Treasurer. The Wall Avenue Baptist Church was the beacon of light in the community from 1918 to 1928. Clergymen of the Wall Avenue Baptist Church were until it’s closing were Rev. A. J. Billingsly, 1917-19; Rev. H. L. Marque, 1919-20; Rev. John W. Morris, 1920-21; Rev. M. A. Eilonth; 1921-23; Rev. T. L. Washington, 1923-25; Rev. James E. More, 1925-27; Rev. D. D. Banks, 1927-28; In 1929, Sis. Georgia Holt arrived in Ogden from Los Angeles, CA, reopened the Wall Avenue Baptist Church doors. She began a Sunday School with one quarter and the Bible. In August 1930, Bro. and Sis. Neal came to Ogden and became affiliated with the church. Upon a suggestion from the Neal's, Wall Avenue Baptist Church extended a call to its first pastor, Rev. L. A. Platt. According to church archives, Rev. Platt preached his first sermon on October 5, 1930. He rendered faithful service until called to pastor at the Bethel Baptist Church in Pocatello, ID in 1936. Succeeding pastors were Rev. J. L. Jones, 1936-37; Rev. William Paxton, 1938-42; Rev. Jessie L. Conner; 1942-48; Rev. J. L. Rollerson, 1948-51 and Rev. Benjamin J. Washington, who accepted the call and delivered his first sermon on April 3, 1952. Under the leadership of Rev. Benjamin J. Washington, the church had many noteworthy accomplished, purchasing its first parsonage in July 1952 and bought two property lots. As the membership outgrew the Wall Avenue Baptist Church, the second prayer was answered and the congregation was blessed to acquire property for the building of a new edifice located at 2935 Lincoln Avenue in Ogden, which it currently remains. The ground breaking services were held on Sunday, May 16, 1954. The foundation was laid in November 1954 and the cornerstone was placed on October 31, 1955. This structure was dedicated on October 26, 1958. There were several proposed names for the new construction. The church approved the proposal submitted by the late Sis. Jimmie L. Bell for the church to be named “The New Zion Missionary Baptist Church”. Thus, the Wall Avenue Baptist Church had a new name and became “The Church Built By Faith.” Rev. Washington pastured New Zion until 1961. Many pastors stood in John’s shoes from Rev. Samuel C. Miller, 1962-64; Rev. Lacy K. Curry, 1965-68 and under his leadership two area properties were purchased at 2957 and 2959 Lincoln Avenue; Rev. O. E. Piper, 1969-70; Rev. R. L. Watkins, 1970; Rev. Joseph S. Speech, 1971; Rev. Willie Davis, September 14, 1972 to July 1978 and departed to accept the pastorate in Las Vegas, NV. During Rev. Davis’ tenure, the parsonage mortgage for 709-33" Street in Ogden, was paid in full. In February 1979, Rev. N. Lawrence Liggins of Texarkana, TX, accepted the call to pastor and preached his first sermon in May 1979. During the pastorate of Rev. Liggins, our aphorism “Love Ye One Another” [John 13:34] was adopted and in November 1979, New Zion witnessed it largest number of baptisms, to date, where 25 souls were saved. Rev. Liggins departed to pastor in California in 1983. Rev. Tyrone L. Seals served as the New Zion Pastor and presented his first sermon on August 6, 1984. With the departure of Rev. Seals in 1985, Rev. George Merritt served as the Pastor from 1986 to 1988. Upon the departure of Rev. Merritt, the interim pastor was Rev. Gates from 1989 to 1990. The Rev. Isaac P. Brantley was extended and accepted the call to pastor New Zion from 1990 to 1996. Rev. Cal Carter served as the interim pastor from 1996-97 and New Zion called Rev. James Abrams of Sacramento, CA in 1997. Under Rev. Abrams’ tenure, a historical event took place when he ordained Rev. Michelle Dockery Boyer as the first female ever to be licensed as a Reverend at New Zion on May 15, 2004. Rev. Abrams was the Under Shepherd until his resignation on May 31, 2004 and he returned to Sacramento, CA. With the acceptance of the call, Rev. Derrel A. Hughes of Charlotte, NC, delivered his first Proclamation of the Word on Sunday, May 1, 2005. Rev. Hughes served as the Pastor until returning to North Carolina on July 31, 2006. At which time, New Zion extended the call as pastor to Rev. Dr. Bruce Davis, Sr., of Hattiesburg, MS. As with the pastors before Dr. Davis, New Zion continued to grow in membership, Biblical teachings, sound doctrine, many building upgrades and additional property was purchased in the surrounding area of the church. Dr. Davis was the pastor of New Zion until he accepted the call as pastor in December 2011 in Newburgh, NY at which time, he delivered his last sermon on Sunday, December 16". NZBC History Beginning 1916 to March 20, 2016 Page 2 While seeking guidance from the Lord by prayer, supplication and keeping our hand in Gods hand on calling its next pastor, New Zion praises God for its Associate Ministers who fed His people from 1996 to 1997, June 2004 to April 2005, August 2006 to November 2007 and December 22, 2011 to November 18, 2012. They were; Rev. Cal Carter, Rev. Robert and Rev. Betty Hall, Rev. Michelle Dockery Boyer, Min. Lillie Blakeley Holman, Min. Stanley L. Ellington and Min. Michael D. Smauldon. New Zion continues to witness Gods sovereignty and on September 27, 2012, New Zion extended the call to pastor to Rev. Carey E. McCall, Ill, M.Div., of Paterson, NJ. Pastor McCall accepted the tremendous calling and delivered the Word on Sunday, November 25, 2012. Since the arrival of Pastor, First Lady Phyllis McCall and family, we have seen the Lords grace and mercy with many who have acknowledged Jesus the Christ as their Lord and Savior, spiritual training, re-activation and creation of new ministries to name a few. On March 29, 2014, Pastor McCall ordained as Deacon, Deacon Thomas M. White and ordained Rev. Stanley L. Ellington and Rev. Lillie Blakeley Holman as Reverends on May 3, 2014. In January 2016, we adopted the “Team New Zion: Pillars of Leadership having Commitment, Conviction, Competency and Character’ as a dictum. As we commemorate in March 2016, 90 years of standing as a beacon of light in this community and through Gods anointing and under the Leadership of Rev. McCall, we are pressing towards the future (however, not forgetting our past) endeavors to go forth as it states in our church mission to be “A Ministry Where Everyone Counts” [Ephesians 4:4] and our church vision for “We are a church whose aim is to Disciple people through the Holy Scriptures, Our Words, and Our Conduct as we grow towards Christian Maturity. We are a church whose aim is to make sure that every member has Involvement in a ministry that allows their God given gift to be used to His Glory and the Edification of the Body of Christ. Clergymen of the Wall Avenue Baptist Church were until it's closing were Rev. A. J. Billingsly, 1917-19; Rev. H. L. Marque, 1919-20; Rev. John W. Morris, 1920-21; Rev. M. A. Eilonth; 1921-23; Rev. T. L. Washington, 1923-25; Rev. James E. More, 1925-27; Rev. D. D. Banks, 1927-28: In 1929, Sis. William Paxton, 1938-42: Rev. Jessie L. Conner; 1942-48: Rev. J. NZBC History Page 2 Beginning 1916 to March 20, 2016 While seeking guidance from the Lord by prayer, supplication and keeping our hand in Gods hand on calling its next pastor, New Zion praises God for its Associate Ministers who fed His people from 1996 to 1997, June 2004 to April 2005, August 2006 to November 2007 and December 22, 2011 to November 18, 2012. In January 2016, we adopted the “Team New Zion: Pillars of Leadership having Commitment, Conviction, Competency and Character” as a dictum. We are a church whose aim is to show Stewardship through our resources, commitment, and skills for the furtherance of the Kingdom of God here on Earth.” Sis. Betty Blakeley Smauldon Church Clerk 1. My name is Rev. Carey E. McCall III, and I'm the newly elected pastor of the New Zion Baptist Church located at 2935 Lincoln Avenue Ogden, Utah. I'm a former resident of Hackensack, New Jersey where my wife and two beautiful children recently moved from in the latter part of November 2012. We are blessed to begin what God promised to be a fruitful life and experience with the community surrounding New Zion. To this end I've participated in my former pastorate with many fellowships of varying ethnicity and cultures that really embellish the cross section of heaven I believe the scriptures fosters. I'm hoping that in the near future I (New Zion Family) might come together and do ministry with your fellowship that aids in nurturing, exemplifying and strengthening healthy relationships beyond the walls of our churches. I'm aware of many initiatives that are taking place civically, socially and federally, but I'm looking at making Christ the center of our cause. That said, on Sunday, May 5, 2013, at 3:30 p.m., I will be installed as the Pastor of New Zion Baptist Church and I would love to have you as a part of this service. To give you insight as to the things God is doing in our church, I'm attaching our latest newsletter for your enjoyment. Looking forward to hearing from you via phone or just come by so we can get acquainted. church office number is (S01) 392-2211 and we are open Tuesday through Friday. Furthermore, not many achieve the milestone of crossing through many decades. allowed this pillar called New Zion to stand down through the years. Your servant spirit has been instrumental in the effectiveness of the Convention to be a viable source of Christian education, spiritual growth and equipping saints to boldly share the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ. As you and the congregation of New Zion Baptist Church commemorate this historic milestone, | and the officers of the IGBC extend praise and thanksgiving to the Lord for His gracious allowance of your humble, yet steadfast resolve to be a ministry of excellence and exalt the name of His Son and our Savior Jesus Christ.
