Then and Neu - Available church — built Wall — records indicate that in I 9] 8 “the Utah Baptist State. Convention purchased a lot on Wall Avenue in Ogden, where the congregation— the Avenue Baptist Church. The church was incorporated on February 10, 1926. In 1929, Mrs. Georgia A. Holt came from Los Angeles, CA, _ to Ogden and reopened the Wall Avenue Church doors that had been closed for : atime, and began a Sunday School. In August 1930, Mr. and Mrs. Neal came to Ogden and following active affiliation with the church, received consensus of its members to extend a call for the Wall Avenue Baptist Church’s first pastor. Reverend L.A. Platt of Ontario, CA, became the first Pastor of the Wall Avenue — _ Baptist Church on October 2, 1930 and rendered faithful service for six years, _ Succeeding pastors from 1936 to the early 1960’s included Reverend J. L. Jones, — 1937; Reverend Paxton, 1937-1940; Reverend Jessie L. Conner, 1942-1948; 4 | ~ Reverend J. L. Rollerson, 1948-1951; and Reverend B. J. Washington, | 952- 4 1961. Under Reverend Washington's leadership, the congregation increased and became in need of a new building. As a result, the Wall Avenue Baptist Church found its present location and became known as the New Zion Baptist Church. q Ground breaking services were held on Sunday, May 16, 1954, and a dedication — service was held on Sunday, October 26, 1958. This dedication service acquired the name of “Loyalty Day.’? Each year on the fourth Sunday in October, New — Zion observes this special dedication service, usually preceded by a Fall Revival — and today, marks the 48" commemorative celebration of that most blessed occasion. There have been a number of dedicated pastors following Reverend — Washington who have significantly contributed and served faithfully to sustain — the godly light of New Zion Baptist Church in the Ogden community. Embarking -on anew millennium, New Zion has faithfully declared to strengthen our resolve to continue, with the grace and mercy of God, to be a church in which the — glorious gospel of Jesus Christ is boldly preached. Davis” was born and reared on Georgia, to John H. and Julia Davis. After high school, he ittbiited T uskegee Institute and later became an Air force jet mechanic. He later earned farm a Gough, degrees in Afro-American Studies from Merritt College; Arts and Humanities from Laney College; Rhetoric from University of California at Berkeley; Religion and Philosophy from | Westminster College; Master of Mass Communication from the University of Utah; L and Master of Ministry from Northwest Nazarene College. Reverend Davis came to Salt Lake City in I 972 as a1 teaching fellow and sradual ‘student He was appointed instructor in communication and ethnic studies courses, s earning a distinguished teacher award, and continues to teach in the University of Utah’s Honors and Ethnic Studies Program as Adjunct Associate Professor. | | ae | He was licensed in 1966 and ordained in 1971 for ministry. _ Presently, Reverend. Davis is, and has been since 1974, the Sull time pastor of the historic Calvary Missionary Baptist Church of: Salt Lake City, Utah. He lectures widely on cultural and religious topics. Reverend Davis also serves on community Service and national Council, numerous awards and the boards including Salt Lake the Salt Lake Convention and including an honorary Doctor Housing Visitors Authority, Bureau. of Humane Letters Career He received Degree from ‘the University of Utah in 1993, Salt Lake Community College in 1997, and Dixie State College in 2002. Davis Cur Loyalty Day Guest Speaker .... Reverend Michaed J. Rass, St. Reverend Michael J. Ross, Sr., is a native of Lake Pravidenee, LA. Upon graduating from high school, Reverend Ross enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserves. During this time, he attended Grambling State University located in Grambling, LA and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice, graduating in the top of his class. While at Grambling, he met his wife, Annette. Their union has been blessed with four beautiful children, Tawasky, Michael, Faith, and bi | | Reverend Ross accepted Christ at the young age of seven. On June 27, 1993, he accepted his | call to the ministry. He attended both Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary in Marin, CA and American Baptist Seminary of the West in Berkeley, CA. Reverend Ross graduated with honors in May 1999 with a Master of Divinity Degree. prestigious class. L. Doward McBain | Preaching At his convocation, he was awarded the Prize for outstanding Preacher in his graduating Of his thirteen years of experience in the Gospel ministry, he has served in various capacities | some of which are Associate Minister, Minister of Christian Education & Discipleship, Life Development Institute Instructor, Bible Class & Sunday School Instructor, and Commitment Counselor. From 1998-2001, Reverend Ross served on staff at the oldest Black Baptist church in Alameda County, the Beth Eden Baptist Church, as the Minister of Youth and Young Adults. He also worked in the area of Health Education for the Bay Area Urban League and the San Francisco Department of Public Health. Prior to relocating to Idaho, he taught 7 grade in the Oakland Unified School District. | Since March of 2001, Reverend Ross has been serving as the Senior Pastor of the St. Paul Baptist Church in Boise, ID. In June, 2006, he was selected to serve on the Advisory Board of the Black History Museum. In 2005, he was elected President of the Intermountain General Baptist Convention Congress of Christian Education. He was also selected to teach in the National Baptist/German Baptist Congress of Christian Education in Germany, Reverend Ross is very compassionate, truth, and he loves the Lord.
