Sept. 28, 1918 Mother Mine: We are still in our mountains, but rumor has it not for long. We are enjoying the best of weather and health and have fine quarters and food is excellent. For war time I would say not bad? Night before last, I had dinner with the American and French Lieut., the head of the Y’s in this district and our marshall (French) Last night had lunch with them also but the guests were different. The Medcan chef of the division, the Medcan chef G.B.D. of one regiment and then another Medcan chef of another regiment. Certainly enjoy these dinners. I had the privilege of eating with the mess at all times, but as I can do better work by staying with the men decided it was best. Went with the Lieut. for food yesterday and he told me that he had recommended me for their officers school. We have had three inspections in about the last two weeks and came out of them very favorable. Today we cleaned up our section of the streets, our grounds, etc. This is done every day but once a week it is all swept by brooms. My permission will figure about the 19th of the following month and I am awaiting letters from Jack and Theron to know if it will meet with theirs. Have not had letters from anyone for several days, so expect a number soon. Have some pictures in Paris being finished will forward some if interesting. Our communiqué this morning says the British have taken 24,000 prisoners since the 21st and that the French near Roye advanced four kilometers. The papers at present are mighty good reading and it looks like our turn had come at last. I took for the campaign to go on all winter, at least we have three months more with good luck to fight and I think the fighting will be finished by that time. I may be wrong but having seen the French morale so low when we first arrived to help and to see it now, can imagine Fritz has but little morale left. The only help Fritz can look for is his five hundred thousand 1920 class and now over one hundred and fifty thousand have been taken prisoner, and no one knows how many killed. Japan and Spain on the verge. That with his loss of all his spring and summer drives gone, wouldn’t that kind of decrease any one’s morale. Well Mother Mine, we are here until the job’s done and done right, but the sooner it is completed the sooner millions can rejoin their loved ones.
