Jo’DAnn Dance introduced us to English Playwright John Madison Morton. author of tonight’s show, a one-act farce “Box & Cox”. Val Newton - Mr. Box Bonnie Whitaker - Mr. Cox Jo’DAnn Dance — Mrs. Bouncer He is the The cast was as follows: The play was about a very clever and devious landlady who rents the same room to 2 different gentlemen made possible by the fact that they work different shifts. The audience delighted in the comings and goings, ups and downs, dos and don’ts of Mr. Cox and Mr. Box. We discovered that 2 men living together (besides being controversial) can be argumentive, selfish, deceptive and comical. (Especially noteworthy in tonight’s performance was the perfectly timed sound cue of a horn honking.) Great job ladies! And thank you for all your hard work. Club members then enjoyed a sinfully delicious dish of fresh peaches on top of vanilla ice cream and reveled in conversation with club members. Respectfully submitted by Jolene Zito, Recording Secretary Minutes Ogden Drama Club October 23, 2008 Attendees: Afton Castlemain, Vicki Crist, Joo. She turned the time over to Jolene Zito to read minutes from the September meeting. They were approved. Bonnie distributed copies of the budget for this year to all the members. She announced that Val Newton had audited the books from last year and that everything was in order. A motion to approve Val’s audit was approved by Myrene Van Dyke and seconded by Marge Dene Taylor. Bonnie reminded club members to be sure to get reimbursed for expenses incurred for the Drama Club. There is money in the budget to cover the yearly costs and there is concern regarding the amount of money in the check book. A sympathy card was sent to Teresa Sanderson for the death of her mother-in-law. Nell Heller gave a report on the progress of Guest night. She is still in need of fairies for the show and she asked if there were any adults in the club who would be willing to participate in the show. She asked those interested to contact her. Sharyl Tucker asked for a count for guest night. She passed around a sign-up sheet. Geneva Peterson announced the Christmas program is set for December. She is having the Three Sopranos sing and there will also be some readings or Christmas stories. Myrene asked that the club members who cannot attend the Christmas party let them know because the club has to pay for meals that are ordered but not eaten. The cost for the Christmas brunch should be around $15.00 or $16.00. They need to know an exact count by December first. In Janette’s absence tonight please pay any dues to Bonnie and she will forward it on to Janette. Hazel then delighted the Drama Club audience with the very spooky song “That Old Black Magic” by Johnny Mercer and Harold Arland that made us wonder what kind of spell was going to be cast on us tonight. She was accompanied on the piano by Afton Castlemain. Suzie Venable then took the floor to introduce us to our author for the evening; English playwright John Van Druten. He is known for his witty and verbose observations of contemporary life in London. Bell, Book and Candle was written in 1950 and explores the lives of a coven of witches in Greenwich Village. We were then introduced to the Holroyd family of witches. There was free-spirited Gillian, played by Suzie Venable; mischievous Aunt Queenie, played by Afton Castlemain; and Gillian’s warlock brother, Nicky, played by Margaret Farr. We also met their neighbor; handsome and charming, Skep Henderson , played by Hazel Robertson and author, Sidney Redlitch, also played by Afton Castlemain. As the story unfolds we watch as Gillian decides to put a love spell on her handsome neighbor, Shep Henderson, in order to seek revenge on an old college enemy whom Shep is engaged to marry. However, the plan backfires and she finds herself falling in love with Shep and consequently losing her powers. The members were “spellbound” as they watched spells on phones, neighbors and authors placed by this bevy of witches. There were numerous complications stemming from the interference of Sidney Redlitch and his book on witches and another witch who tries to free Shep from the love-spell and brother Nicky who is consorting with the enemy. In the end the power of love is exposed and all’s well that ends well! Oh, wait that is another show! A great job by all involved! The evening ended with a slice of pumpkin pie served with a dollop of whip cream, hot cider, and, of course, an assortment of nuts served to perfection on Tita’s beautiful china. Yum-yum! We were introduced to two young children, Josh played by Kera Hill, and Becky, played by Jolene Rausch, who were in quest of the “best candy in town” to complete their Halloween celebration. As a result of their quest Becky and a lonely, older woman named Celie, charmingly played by Mary Halverson, become friends. Celie introduces Becky to the mystical fairies who dance in her home, elegantly and gracefully played by Geneva Peterson, Tita Lindquist, and Suzanne Poole. We are soon introduced to Becky’s father, Kyle, played by Suzie Venable, and Grandfather Evan, played by Vicki Crist, who come to break up the revelry that Celie and Becky are enjoying. A friendship develops between Celie and Grandfather Evan who find themselves reminiscing of days gone by. The fun comes to a stop when Evan invites Celie to join him and his wife at a holiday fair the next day. After he leaves Celie realizes that she is really only happy when she dances with the fairies so she decides to join them and become their fairy queen. So, to all of you on moonlight nights, check your window panes to see if Geneva, Tita, Suzanne and Mary are dancing to their sprightly fairy music in their beautiful fairy gowns. Other cast members include Annette Terry and Jolene Zito with Nell Heller on tech. A delicious dessert of carrot-raisin cake served with whipped cream and hot caramel sauce, hot wassail punch and nuts were served on a festive, frolicking fairy table. They were not disappointed. The group was welcomed by Bonnie King who turned the time over to Geneva Peterson, the producer of the day’s program. She introduced the musical trio of Bonnie King, Janette Bischoff, and Shary! Tucker who presented popular Christmas selections in the style that only they can. They were accompanied by Meg Naisbitt on the piano. Vicki Crist presented a humorous look at the importance of Mrs. Clause in the holiday equation with a reading entitled “A Bit of Applause for Mrs. Clause.” It was well received by the members who could all relate to her role in the success of the special holiday night. A dramatic reading “Why the Chimes Rang” was presented by Jolene Zito. The members were then served up a delicious brunch from the Country Club’s renowned kitchen staff. Members enjoyed the meal and each other’s company before lining up to have their pictures taken for the Drama Club scrapbook. “Happy Christmas to all and to all a good-night!” — Decersabor 6, 2008 wwe www 11:00 are y Tolf and CountrCb Ogden — SanctteBirchoff Bonnie King and Sharyl Tucker Ss ar well asa supporting cast of other club membors Hosted by Muyrene Usu Dyke, Ounctte Tony and RSUP: Be RO Niprene Van Dyke at 479-7697 We We ROE plan on attending as we will be taking a group | Minutes Ogden Drama Club January 22, 2009 7:30 p.m. Attendance: Afton Castlemain, Vicki Crist, Margaret Farr, Mary Halverson, Nell Heller, Pam Higginson, Kera Hill, Carol Hurst, Bonnie King, Telitha Lindquist, Meg Naisbitt, Charlene Nelson, Valerie Newton, Geneva Peterson, Karen Brookins, Jolene Rausch, Teresa Sanderson, Joyce Stillwell, Myrene VanDyke, Suzie Venable, Jolene, Zito Excused: Janette Bischoff, Jo?>DAnn Dance, Martha Krebs, Helen Plowgian, Suzanne Poole, Hazel Robertson, Marge Dene Taylor, Annette Terry, Sharyl Tucker, Bonnie Whittaker Absent: Shirlene Hawks-Jacobs The evening began with Bonnie King welcoming the members to Drama Club in Meg Naisbitt’s beautiful home. The minutes from November & December 2008 were read and approved. Roll was taken for November 2008 and January 2009. Bonnie read a lovely card received from Hazel Robertson thanking the members for their love and support in the passing of her son. Mary Halverson read a letter from Lori Rees requesting to bea sustaining member of Drama Club. In addition, Kathy Magner has request via a phone conversation to become sustaining also. She was asked to send a letter to Bonnie for our records. It was announced that the house in April will be changed to Pam Higginson’s new home in West Haven instead of Lori Rees’ home and the play “Little Mary Sunshine” will be chaired by Meg Naisbett instead of Lori. Bonnie passed around the copies of the pictures that were taken of the Drama Club members at the Christmas Brunch. There was one for each member and a copy for the scrapbook. Joyce Stillwell announced the program theme for next year as “Women of Mystery.” The time was then turned over to Mary Halverson to introduce the evening’s play; Mary Coyle Chase’s “Harvey.” This charming comedy with social undertones has delighted audiences for years and this evening’s production was no exception. The play opened with Karen Brookins singing “I’m Called Little Buttercup” as a guest performer at Veta Louise’s afternoon social in which Elwood P. Dowd enters as an unwanted guest. He’s a good-natured and mild-mannered gentleman with a vivid imagination and a fondness for alcohol who was handily played by Jolene Rausch. Elwood immediately introduced us to his dear friend, “Harvey”, a six-foot tall, white, “Pooka” rabbit; played by... no one we could see. Elwood’s frazzled sister, Veta Louise, was played to perfection by Teresa Sanderson. Elwood’s love-starved sister, Myrtle Mae, was convincingly played by Myrene VanDyke. Sexy Miss Kelly and her heart’s desire, Dr. Sanderson, were passionately played by Karen Brookins and Susie Venable. The rough and tumble “white slaver” Wilson was played by our very refined and cultured Meg Naisbett to exact physical and mental precision. Margaret Farr and Nell Heller added their warmth and comedic timing to their characters of Dr. Chumley, Betty Chumley, and Aunt Ethel. Mary Halverson tied the show together with her delightful narration and her smile. The show was well received by the club members as we learned to be wary of formula 977, that “Poor thing, oh, you poor, poor thing!” is a term of endearment not a reference to youfeconomic condition, and that we should be wary of a tall, white rabbit 1°? leaning on a lamppost at the corner of 18" and Fairfax. The evening was tied-up with a serving of bread pudding topped with caramel sauce and a dollop of whipped cream. It was an enjoyable evening for everyone and congratulations to the chairman and the cast for a job well done! The minutes were read and approved and roll was taken by Charlene Nelson who was filling in for Jolene Zito who was errant in her duties while away playing with her grandchildren at Disneyland. Karen Brookins enthusiastically introduced her wonderful students who performed three pieces from their upcoming producti on at \ oe | aaa of. “The Gondoliers” by Gilbert & Sullivan. Jason Kendall, Deter’? Merrill éntley” and Kathleen Woodeson beautifully sang three baci ntely Sarielns songs from the operetta written in 1889, the 12" of 13 operas by Gilbert and Sullivan, which was considered very political at the time. It was, however, one of the biggest successes of their last six operas. Meg Naisbett handed out the recipe for her delicious bread pudding which everyone had been anxiously awaiting. Jeanette Bischoff announced that the play “Guys and Dolls” was being performed at Bonneville High School and that if anyone was interested in purchasing tickets they could get some from her. It was announced that Nell Heller had recently received the Editors Choice Award for poetry presented by the International Library of Poetry. Nell read the award winning poem entitled “The Visit,” a touching account of her visits with a close friend. We all agreed we were proud to know her and call her our friend. It was also announced that Meg Naisbett needed three more people to be in her play next month, Little Mary Sunshine and that anyone who was interested should let her know right away. The time was then turned over to Teresa Sanderson who introduced The Apple Tree by Jerry Brock and Sheldon Harnick based on stories of Mark Twain. After hearing interesting background on the three authors, we were introduced to the talented cast of Martha Krebs, playing Adam, Jeanette Bischoff, playing Eve, Teresa, herself, giving stage directions and playing the snake, and Suzanne Poole playing the piano. Adam, played with precision and humor by Martha, begins by naming the animals in his simplistic and straight forward way, and then declares that he likes being single and the center of his world. Then along comes Eve, played equally humorously and with beautiful femininity by Jeanette. She starts naming the animals based on her creativity and intuition which riles Adam whose ego has been challenged. Eve sighs with exasperation after many encounters with the angry Adam and says she feels like an experiment. Adam just wants to be left alone and doesn’t want to share his hut. Eve finally gets him to open up to sharing the hut, and pretty soon she is decorating it and planting flowers! He is more than annoyed by her constant talk and doing, doing, doing. We all laughed ourselves silly as the clever dialogue and plot unfolded revealing the all too familiar man vs. woman — a delightful version of “Women are from Venus — Men are from Mars.” Adding to the humor and fun of the story were delightful and cleaver songs, sung brilliantly by Jeanette, Teresa and Martha with the equally brilliant Suzanne on piano. Teresa’s conniving, convincccccing sssssssnake helped us all understand how Even could have been tempted to eat that apple, and then get Adam to follow along. Ordered out of the Garden, they begin a new life in the “real world.” The plot becomes thoughtful and poignant as Adam and Eve settle in with each other and become parents to Cain and Abel. We were drawn into their sorrow after Cain slays Abel and then flees, leaving the house all too quiet. It is now, in the stillness, that they realize they have come to love each other. After Eve passes away, Adam reflects on how they both thought it was so awful when they had to leave the Garden, but now he realizes that wherever Eve was, there was the Garden. He misses her terribly and closes telling us that he has to go and water her flowers. There were several of us drying our eyes as the delicious dessert was served which was — appropriately — Apple pie and ice cream! Everyone left having enjoyed a wonderful evening of great entertainment and association with wonderful friends. It will be at Pam Higginson’s new home in West Haven. The evening’s show “Little Mary Sunshine” was announced by Chairman Meg Naisbitt. This 1958 musical was written by Rick Besoyan and is a parody of the romantic operetta of “days gone by” filled with stock characters and delightful songs. Janette McDonald and Nelson Eddie were not available for tonight’s show so the part of the heroine, Little Mary Sunshine and the hero, Captain “Big Jim” Warington were played by our very own Joyce Stillwell and Kera Hill. The motherly double “D” figure of MME. Ernestine Von Liebedich was played by Pam Higginson, The wise and noble Chief Brown Bear by Jolene Zito. The young bickering lovers of Corporal Billy Jester and Nancy Twinkle were played by Bonnie Whitaker and Annette Terry. The dignified, retired General Oscar Fairfax was played by Val Newton and a bevy of young flirtatious, yet proper, young ladies from Eastchester Finishing School were played by the entire cast. The villainous Yellow Feather, with his ferocious war-cry, was played by Meg Naisbitt who also played the piano, CD player and narrated. We learned from the piece that “When e’er a cloud appears Filled with doubt and fears Look for a sky of blue.. . The hostesses for the evening then served a Lemon Cream pie with nuts on the side. Geneva Peterson asked that everyone sign the list for June Breakfast and record their number of guests who will be in attendance. Bonnie noted that Hazel is recovering nicely from her hip replacement surgery; she is home and working hard at her therapy. Afton has recovered from her surgery and the members were pleased to have her join us for club tonight. Bonnie received thank-you notes from Chareya and Altruist clubs for the traveling show. Bonnie mentioned that Teresa Sanderson had a great article in the Standard about the latest show in which she performed. A clip board was sent around to the members so each could check their personal information for the club book before it is printed. The time was turned over to Jolene Zito who introduced the musical selection for the evening. She was joined by Pam Higginson in Roger and Hammerstein’s “Stepsister’s Lament” from Cinderella. The evening was then given to the cast of Neil Simon’s comedy “Barefoot in the Park.” Gharyl Tucker as chairman introduced this romantic comedy that has delighted audiences for generations. It tells the story of.Cori and Paul’s struggle through the ups and downs (that would be% flights of ups and ff flights of downs plus the stoop) of young love and young marriage. This comedy is brilliantly timed, cleverly crafted, funny, witty, full of interesting characters and with all the heavy breathing — sexy. Suzanne Poole played our young, energetic, spontaneous Corie with §haryl Tucker as her studious, strait-laced and very handsome husband Paul. Charlene Nelson played Corie’s proper and well-meaning mother who gets caught in a compromising situation with Teresa Sanderson’s character, the “Bluebeard of 48" street”, Victor Valasco. The supporting role of Harry Pepper the telephone man was also played by Teresa Sanderson. Annette Terry made sense of all the action and chaos with her narration. What did we learn from this night of comedy? We learned how to pop Kenichi, sing Shama Shama, and that if we run barefoot through Central Park in 17 degree weather we will probably catch a cold, but that doesn’t matter because love warms everything in the end. Refreshments of delicious carrot cake, nuts and beverage were served by our house committee Pam Higginson, Bonnie Whitaker, and Helen Plowgian. They gathered to enjoy each others company and to hear the final play of the 2008-2009 season “You Can’t Take it With You.” The meeting began as Bonnie King welcomed everyone and remarked on the great attendance. Jolene Zito called roll and read the minutes from April. She gave her secretary’s report for the year showing there was 70% attendance, 23% excused absences, and 7% absences for this past year. Bonnie read the financial report prepared by Treasurer Janette Bischoff and reviewed items of concern. Martha Krebs discussed the upcoming June Breakfast and said it would cost about $16.00 or $17.00 for the meal of pulled pork and chocolate moose. She asked that the members give Geneva or Hazel the names of their guests. The time was given to Shirlene Hawkes who spoke about a fund-raising campaign for the Children’s Organ Donors Association. Her young granddaughter is scheduled for a liver and kidney transplant and they are trying to raise money to help cover the costs of the surgery. Envelopes were placed so club members could pick one up as they left for the evening. The music for the evening was provided by Kera Hill and her beautiful young daughter Teek. Helen Plowgian took center stage as she introduced the evening’s show George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart’s Pulitzer Prize-winning comedic play in three acts “You Can’t Take it With You.” The play originally opened on Broadway in 1936 at the Booth Theatre. The cast consists of 15 characters who are sometimes on stage at the same time making it challenging for our performers. The audience loved watching our members have conversations with themselves, get lost in the script, and sometimes forget which character and which voice they were suppose to be using. The setting of the show was the home of Grandpa Martin Vanderhof, a man of unique philosophies about living life, who was surrounded by a family of eccentrics much like himself. The audience delighted in the script as it introduced us to a bevy of characters brilliantly portrayed by our club members; an author deciding to write a book because a typewriter is accidentally delivered to the house, a young man in the basement making illegal fireworks, a young girl hopelessly trying to be a ballerina, a man accidentally distributing Marxis propaganda and a perfectly timed doorbell cue of a coo-coo clock which might have seemed inappropriate, but not considering this family. This insightful comedy taught us a couple of things; “Families ought to get to know each other. Who’s to say who lives right and who lives wrong” and finally, the best bit of advice that we’ve learned all year - if the government thinks you’re dead, you don’t have to pay taxes. Congratulations to the cast of Helen Plowgian, Tita Linquist, Shirlene Hawkes-Jacobs, Annette Terry, Bonnie King, and Carol Hurst for a job well done! The guests were then served a delicious slice of not one, not two but Triple Berry pie freshly baked by Sandy’s Fine Dining and assorted salted nuts on the side. The members bid each one “farewell” with the anticipation of meeting again for June Breakfast on June 6" at the Ogden Golf and Country Club. The group was welcomed by President Bonnie King and asked to introduce themselves as well as their guests. The time was turned over to Karen Brookins, the chair of the program, and she introduced the morning’s program “A Musical Journey of Vienna.” Karen shared the rich history of Vienna and discussed numerous composers including: Mozart, Schubert, and Strauss. Selections of music were shared by Karen and several of her Weber State students: Tyler Probasco, Marie Bentley, Dayne Romero, Natalie Bischoff, and Nick Maughan on the piano.
