Abstract Purposes/Aims: This project aims to increase nurses' confidence in providing discharge teaching and improve recognition of postpartum hypertension after discharge by implementing standardized education for the postpartum population. Rationale/Background: Postpartum hypertension is a leading cause of hospital readmission and maternal morbidity. Many patients lack adequate education regarding postpartum hypertension and the signs and symptoms to watch for. Delayed recognition leads to severe blood pressure that can cause serious, life-threatening, and long-term health complications. Methods: An evidence-based postpartum hypertension education program was developed for nurses and implemented on a postpartum unit. This included standardized discharge teaching, written educational materials, instructions on how to monitor blood pressure at home, and how and when to contact healthcare providers. Pre- and post-intervention data are collected to evaluate patients' and nurses' knowledge of postpartum hypertension. Results: Implementation of the education program may increase nursing staff confidence in delivering standardized, evidence-based postpartum hypertension education. Based on the research, it is anticipated that nurses will report that patients demonstrate understanding of postpartum hypertension symptoms through successful teach-back as part of established discharge criteria, which may lead to improved patient outcomes. Conclusions: Standardized postpartum hypertension teaching enhances patient knowledge and improves the quality of postpartum care. Structured discharge education increases confidence in care delivery and self-management at discharge.
