She built a dedicated following with her “Behind the Scenes” columns, written from her exclusive interviews with the movie stars. (Clark Gable was her favorite.) Her “person to person” column in the Sunday society section was must reading for the socially active. The splashy Sunday society cover pages that became her trademark as she labored to get just the right emphasis on an activity are today’s collector items. She epitomized what once was a staple with newspapers: The stereotyped stylish society editor who hob-nob- bed with the movie stars, was a natural presence at community social events, the country club soirees, she poured at teas always relishing her role. She took a certain personal pride in publicizing the comings and goings of the socially elitists. : Yet there was another dimension to the qualities of Alice West. She was a kind, considerate person who made friends easily with everyone. She loved the total community. She looked beyond the scope of the community’s social pressures that are frequently imposed on newspaper editors and used her traditional Sunday society covers to focus on the diversities, the full spectrum of the lifestyles oo Obituaries Newspaper past editor dead at 96 Mrs. Alice Pardoe West, 96, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 1986 at the home of her son and daugh- ter-in-law,Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. West, of 4169 Lakeview Drive, of causes incident to age. She was born Dec. 30, 1889 | in Og- den, a daughter of Thomas and Lenora Farr Pardoe. phe. was a granddaughter of Lorin Farr, Ogden’s first mayor. She married Leslie C. West o of the readership of the Ogden Standard-Examiner. Her love to report on the theater and movie screens spilled heavily into her personal life. She willingly helped aspiring actors and actresses by directing local theatrical productions. She took pleasure in being on stage, wrote plays, short stories. She was prominent in the founding of the Ogden Drama Club and Blue Quill Writers Club. When Alice West’s long tenure as Ogden Standard-Examiner society editor was over, her departure left a void in the newsroom and the community mostly because of the transition in newspapers. She retired at the time when journalism replaced that niche in the printed media that had been devoted to society items with the more contemporary reporting on today’s issues and lifestyles. Alice West died Wednesday. She lived nearly a century, enjoying life to the fullest. Few of her contemporaries re- main to mourn because of this longevity. Ranks at the Standard-Examiner who worked in the newsroom with the effervescent society editor also are thinning. - Alice Pardoe West became an Ogden legend in her own time. Condolences are extended to her family. 20 YEARS AGO.” April 10, 1967 ca — i : Bi , aie 50 YEARS AGO i “ hh Ee ' a Bes eee : : May 3, 1937 Sree Kathy Douglas, a Weber State ‘College sophomore, had received : a to leave their “800 choice relics” 4 Robert Polidore was elected student body president at Weber College to serve during 1937-38. one of the most ‘highly regarded . -honors of the year at the college — that of friendliest girlon cam- . pus.
