Victory Sunday 2004 Wings: Volume 2, No. 4 ee ee NPBC to hold Praise in the Park NPBC will hold the first annual praise in the park at the Valley Regional Park on Saturday, August 28. The praise in the park is part of the Victory Sunday evangelic effort being organized by the newly licensed pastor of community outreach, Aaron Witcher. Witcher describes the event as a multi-denominational, family-oriented celebration to spread the Gospel. Pattie brought her husband Terry to the Victory Sunday service. “The service truly impacted my life,” says Terry, “Before that I had never owned or read the Bible.” Opheikens began to regularly attend Sunday morning services, Sunday School and weekly Bible Study. “About a year after my first service at New Pil“The service truly impacted my life. My wife and daughter continued to come to services with me, and joined the church a year after I did.” “Terry’s spiritual growth has been phenomenal,” says senior pastor, Corey J. The motion was unanimously accepted by the church body. Davis will begin a 6 month training program that will involve mentorship by a senior deacon. (Courtesy Disneyland) Youth Department goes to Disneyland The Youth Department at New Pilgrim Baptist Church is planning at trip to Disneyland for our active youth members ages 6 and older, said Dr. Joyce Gray, youth director, and Youth Pastor Alonzo K. Solomon. The trip to Anaheim, California is planned for UEA Weekend, October 2831, Dr. Gray said. The trip will be two nights, three days. The park is located 27 miles south of Los Angeles. It has eight "themed" lands and 60 major attractions. "Younger children may come, but their parents must come with them," Dr. Gray said. "We would like to have one chaperon for every six children." The trip will cost approximately $350 per person and includes transportation by bus, hotel accommodations, and passes. Costs will be defrayed through donations and sponsorships. There are currently several Fundraisers going on to help support the trip. If you are interested in sponsoring a child or children please contact NPBC. Checks may be made out to NPBC and earmarked for the Disneyland Trip. The itinerary is in progress. scheduled for January 2005, at which time he will become an official member of the deacon board. A native of Los Angeles, California, Davis has been an active member of NPBC for 5 years. He is currently a member of the NPBC mass choir, the laymen’s ministry, the backdoor ministry and serves as the treasurer of the trustee board. He is married to Dr. Kamisha Johnson-Davis, also of Los Angeles, California. Dr. Davis serves on the finance committee. Together they have a 6 month old daughter Zharia. The 32-year old sees age as being his greatest challenge. “My age does give me some reservations but I have a great role model in my 33-year old senior pastor, who has helped me to Ancel Davis and daughter Zharia understand that God does not con- sider age as a stumbling block, but rather he uses our availability to prepare us for the task at hand.” The official board consists of the two biblical officers of the early church as found in the book of Acts. NPBC’s deacon board presently has 10 members. Summer activities begin on Sunday, July 18 with a bike ride through one of the local parks. This will be followed JULY-AUGUST 2004 by a skating trip in the month of July. August plans include a horseback riding and a youth outing to a Stingers Baseball game on August 11. The summer activities will end with the annual trip to Utah’s Hogle zoo. Yet when brought together in a garden, they all work together to make the live painting complete. They all bend the same direction in the wind and seek the nourishment of a spring rain. The members of New Pilgrim Baptist Church are just like a beautiful garden. The people are as diverse as the plants and flowers. Several times this year the rich histories, customs and geography of the New Pilgrim Family have been shared with everyone during Sunday Services. Four teams of basketball enthusiasts played 4 on 4 basketball. The players' ages ranged from 12 to over 40. The roster included one female, Dominique Campbell of NPBC. Members of the University of Utah men’s basketball team were among the players showcasing their talents. Trophies were awarded to the championship team and the tournament runner-up. Other players received certificates to various fitness centers. Players included Joseph Sawyer, Robert Sawyer, Antoine Cisco, Aaron Witcher, Tacuma, Tim Parker, Robert Cisco, McGale Grover, Chris Fortune, Richard Channey, Justin Hawkins, Timothy Drisdom, Cameron Hodges, Dominique Campbell, Ken Carl, Remy and J.R. Since the tournament, participants began weekly pick-up games after Wednesday night Bible Study. “Seeing these young men and women having fun in God’s house brings joy to my heart," says senior pastor, Hodges. These weekly games have attracted youth and young adults in the community surrounding the church. Participants begin each game with prayer and gospel music plays in the background during the games. NPBC is equipped with a high school sized gymnasium that accommodates these events. The church anniversary committee is headed by Lisa Rogers and Bonnie Burley. The mother daughter duo have organized several events throughout the year to help celebrate the church’s 82nd anniversary. The church anniversary celebration will be held on October 24.
