Hiscox’s New Directory for Baptist Churches, which itself had been revised by Dr. Hiscox from an earlier work. In preparing the present volume, the editors have corrected factual information which was no longer accurate, added material on subjects which have become pertinent since the author’s day, eliminated sections which were no longer relevant, and improved the readability of the book by simplifying language, eliminating duplications, and improving the typography. Yet the essence of the earlier book is preserved. The Hiscox Guide has been prepared with the approval of Dr. Hiscox’s heirs, and there is every reason to believe that it will be warmly welcomed by those who have found this author’s books helpful through the years. COVER DESIGNED BY A. W. LIMONT Edward T. Hiscox, D.D. was born in West erly, Rhode Island, in 1814, and was bap- tized at the age of twenty. After graduating from Madison University in 1843, he served successively as the pastor of Baptist churches in a number of northeastern cities, includ- ing Westerly, Rhode Island, Norwich, Con- necticut, New York City, and Mount Ver- non, New York. Cathcart’s Baptist Encyclopaedia described him as ‘an able preacher and a prolific writer.”” Dr. Hiscox died in 1901. Best known of his writings was The Baptist Church Directory, which he revised as The New Directory for Baptist Churches and which appears now as The Hiscox Guide for Baptist Churches. He also wrote The Standard Manual for Baptist Churches (a shorter form of the Directory), The Star Book for Ministers, and a number of other volumes which achieved great popularity in their day. Others prefer a more restricted fellowship such as the National Association of Evangelicals, the American Council of Christian Churches, and the International eration with schools, colleges, and campus Christian Council of Christian Churches. Not all the world’s Baptists feel closely enough akin to one another to maintain fellowship, but the vast majority participate in the Baptist World Alliance, a rather loosely pation in interdenominational ministerial fellowships or other activities which do not involve the denominational fellowship at all.
