The Satterwhite Daughters and Family Pastor and Lady McCall and your New Zion Baptist Church Family | An Excerpt from The Broken Church 2. WHAT DOES GOD EXPECT FROM HIS CHURCH? ... by Pastor Darrell G. Vaughn Jesus expects great things from His church. We ask ourselves why the local churches are not having that much effect on people nowadays, and then we come up with a list of biblical answers about how Satan is trying to destroy the church. He is. He always has. But the real question is -- HOW is he doing it? He is accomplishing his mission by getting us unfocused on what our real mission is! Look at what many of the churches are offering nowadays. You can browse through any newspaper that lists church activities and you will see the same _ thing, over and over again. 1. WHAT IS TODAY'S CHURCH DOING? We are called to share Christ. We can only do this when we are in a true relationship with him and by imitating Him in our own lives. We must know Christ and not just know about Him. The way to do that is by reading the Word of God, and not ignoring what the Word of God commands. Is that what most of our mainline churches are teaching today -- or not? One church was having the traditional fellowship luncheon service, where they "preach while they eat." | know that Christians like to eat as much as anyone else, but there is a time and place for everything. Then, there is the ever-present "Gospel Sing Night."Have you ever noticed how more people will show up for a time of singing than show up for a Bible study? Did you know there is a church that celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Andy Griffith TV show recently? And they did this on Sunday morning. One of the largest churches in America does not preach from the Bible. They put on plays that "show people how to cope with problems in life." Many more churches have pastors who do not carry Bibles to church, and some churches claim they only want "happy Christians" so they do not talk about sin, hell, or the blood of Jesus. Churches today are too busy catering to their congregations by offering nothing but watered down sermons and fun activities. That is why today's churches are becoming more and more ineffective. It is no wonder that today's churches are actually hurting people spiritually by keeping the truth of salvation from them! The church of Laodicea is upon us! The next step will be that many if not most of our churches will begin preaching false gospels and sermons that try to get as much money from the people as possible. You hear preachers all the time saying you need to give a "seed" to their ministry and God will reward you back with many times. that amount. What a crock! We Plant our seed only where we know the ground is fertile with salvation being evident. Besides that LUKE 8:11, explains the parable of the seeds by saying that the "seed is the Word of God." We are to sow a seed, but that means we are to give others the Word of God and then that will be rewarded by seeing souls saved! Probably the greatest of these is that we keep _ intently focused on Him and what He offers humanity, and that is salvation from our sin and eternal life in Heaven. After all,! would think that is far more important than using a service in church to explain how to deal with rude people in a grocery store. God's Word says, “to train up a child in the way he should go and he will not depart from that training.” Let me say this ... If you have children, it is your direct responsibility to raise them in the Word of God. The church should be doing the same. Rather than offering children games to play during the adult service, it is mandatory that the church teach them about Jesus and what God wants from them! Many of the children have one or more parents that are unsaved, and this might be the only chance they have of hearing what will save them. Our churches should never pass on that Opportunity by just offering games instead. Let the schools teach them how to act on the playground. Let the churches teach them about the Lord. There is nothing more important than teaching a person what God says, whether it be a child or an adult. PSALM 119:11, tells us why we need to know the Word of God. "| have hidden your Word in my heart that | might not sin against You." PSALM 119:105, explains why we can follow and depend on God's Word; "Your Word is a Do you remember your very first love? You couldn't keep your mind off that handsome little boy or cute little girl, could you? Your entire life was consumed by how you felt towards them. You ate, slept, and lived with nothing on your mind That is how we first started off being Christians; we we thought about Him, the more excited we got! But the relationship seems to have lost its passion. Today's churches are teaching today's Christians to live in the ashes. The end result is that few of us are still in love with our Savior as we once were. We prefer to be entertained rather than be taught. We end up just "going through the motions." So, how do we fix our broken churches? Let's start by reading and getting to know God's Word. Once we read His Word, we need to ponder what we have read; to think about what it means and how we might instill that meaning into our personal lives. If we straighten our personal lives out, our churches will soon follow our lead. Jesus told the last of the seven churches that it had become lukewarm and that He found them so vile that He would vomit them out of His mouth. He said they had become that way because they had become rich and didn't feel as if they really needed the church any longer and in so doing, they were Our churches need to get serious about what we are supposed to be doing! We are not to concentrate on growing so big that the church owns an entire community that surrounds the church building. We are to offer sermons that teach the meat of God’s Word, not messages that make us fill good about ourselves. The church is supposed to be a place where we come together to humble our hearts in true worship to Jesus We are that church today. We Christ. His To be thankful for every have received and to honor God backs on the sin of this world salvation as a serious reality in blessing by turning and _ take our lives. And the church is a place where we are to teach His Word. For how can we have a personal relationship with God if we do not know what He wants from us? The Word encourages us to love others enough to offer them God's love and truth. Church is not a place where we sit and wait for others to find us and come in. It is a place where we learn how to reach out to them and teach them about Jesus. It isn't about getting the largest congregation in town, but about growing the number of believers in Jesus Christ. MATTHEW 28:19-20 commands us, "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything | have commanded you. And surely | am with you always, to the very end of the age." Jesus didn't sit at the city gates waiting for people to come to Him. He was constantly on the move looking everywhere for the lost, finding them and declaring salvation to them. So, what does God expect from His church? He doesn't This is the Heartbeat of God and what Jesus wants Christians and churches to do! care if we have fellowship dinners, but instead of gossiping while we eat, we should be encouraging one 3 3. HOW DO WE FIX OUR BROKEN CHURCHES? another by praising the name of Jesus while we eat. them. couldn't think of anything but Jesus, and the more lamp to my feet and a light for my path." we our but wretched and didn't Laodicea. In REVELATION 3:20, even know it. are the church of it tells us that Jesus is standing there knocking on the door, waiting for us to open it and invite Him in. | think He has been knocking on the doors of some churches now so long that He has developed calluses on his knuckles. All | can say is that | thank God He still loved the Laodicean church and He _ still loves us today, too. We fix today's churches by knowing God's priorities. God's priority is not being entertained on Sunday mornings. His priority is our being taught from His Word. It is being encouraged in church to tell others about the loving grace God Offers. It is becoming focused on His will, not our pleasure. The pastors who have been truly called by Jesus to shepherd His flock and who are obedient to His Word in doing so, will have churches in tune with our Lord's commands. Remember, we are only the body. He is the head. Whether a church is successful depends more on how focused they are on doing God's work, not on how large they become. There is nothing wrong in itself with growing a church large in numbers - as long as the true focus is on Jesus and not on church growth or on how to keep the membership so we can keep their tithes and offerings coming in to pay for our luxurious churches. In 2 TIMOTHY 2:15, we are told to study the Word to show ourselves approved by God. When you take the accurate teaching of the Bible out of the church and replace it with easy listening messages that offend nobody, you end up with a country club that offends the Lord. In the beginning, which occurred near the start, there was nothing but God, darkness, and some gas. The Bible says, "The Lord thy God is one," but | think He must be a lot older than that. Anyway, God said, "Give me a light!" _ and someone did. Then God made the world. He split the Adam and made Eve. Adam and Eve were naked, but they weren't embarrassed because mirrors hadn't been invented yet. Adam and Eve disobeyed God by eating one bad apple, so they were driven from the. Garden of Eden. Not sure what they were driven in though, because they didn't have cars. Adam and Eve had a son, Cain, who hated his brother as long as he was Abel. Pretty soon all of the early people died off, except for Methuselah, who lived to be like a million or something. One of the next important people was Noah, who was a good guy, but one of his kids was kind of aHam. Noah built a large boat and put his family and some animals in it. — He asked some other people to join him, but they said they would have to ~ take a rain check. After Noah came Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. oF U es ¥ OR T Y E & B gs J ¥.. &. Oo N O | T Ay [ E E: if Pp B E E R R C J7 a £ E Jacob was more famous than his brother, Esau, because Esau sold Jacob his birthmark in exchange for some pot roast. Jacob had a son named Joseph who wore a really loud sports coat. Another important Bible guy is Moses, whose real name was Charlton Heston. Moses led the Israel Lights out of Egypt and away from the evil Pharaoh after God sent ten plagues on Pharaoh's people. These plagues included frogs, mice, lice, bowels, and no cable. God fed the Israel Lights every day with manicotti. Then he gave them His Top Ten Commandments. | _ These include: don't lie, cheat, smoke, dance, or covet your neighbor's _ stuff. Oh, yeah, | just thought of one more: Humor thy father and thy mother. — One of Moses' best helpers was Joshua who was the first Bible guy to use spies. Joshua fought the battle of Genital and the fence fell over on the. town. After Joshua came David. He got to be king by killing a giant with a slingshot. He had a son named Solomon who had about 300 wives and 500 porcupines. My teacher says he was wise, but that doesn't sound very wise to me. After Solomon there were a bunch of major league prophets. One of these — _ was Jonah, who was swallowed by a big whale and then barfed up on the _ shore. There were also some minor league prophets, but | guess we don't _ have to worry about them. After the Old Testament came the New Testament. Jesus is the star of The New Testa-ment. He was born in Bethlehem in a barn. (| wish | had been _ born in a barn too, because my mom is always saying to me, "Close the door! Were you born in a barn?" It would be nice to say, "As a matter of fact, | was.") During His life, Jesus had many arguments with sinners like the Pharisees and the Republicans. Jesus also had twelve opossums. The worst one was Judas Asparagus. Judas was so evil that they named a _ terrible vegetable after him. _ Jesus was a great man. He healed many leopards and even preached to _ some Germans on the Mount. But the Democrats and all those other bad by guys put Jesus on trial before Pontius the Pilot. Pilot didn't stick up for Jesus. He just washed his hands instead. Anyways, Jesus died for our sins, then came back to life again. He went up to Heaven but will be back at the end of the Aluminum. His return is foretold in the book of Revolution. Let us continue to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ! The Broken Church ... Pastor Darrell G. Vaughn (continued from page 3) The Word of God will always be offensive to everybody at one point in time. We can sugar coat it all day long, but the moment we tell the unsaved that they will go to hell without Jesus as their Savior, it will offend them. It is called conviction, and that is one of the things the Holy Spirit does is to convict our sin. Another thing Christians can do to fix our churches is to stop reading all the books about the Bible instead of reading the Bible itself. We must remember that the Bible is God’s Word and every other book is just one man’s opinion. Jesus told the Loadicean church He stands at the door and knocks. He is waiting for someone to answer and invite Him in. Do we hear Him knocking or are we so busy going through the motions that we hear nothing? We are living in the final stage of church history. The next event on God's calendar is when Jesus comes to collect the real believers and takes them to Heaven. This is called the Rapture. It does not matter if you believe it or not, our options might keep us comfortable, but they do nothing to alter reality. You can stay away from church; refuse to read the Bible; go to these churches that make a mockery out of our Lord's house; or anything else you want while you satisfy yourself that you are safe. But the very instant you meet Jesus, you will become an instant believer in the stupidity of your choices. Are you sure you want to take a chance doing that on so great an issue? We can fix today’s church by standing up and speaking God's Word. Right is right and wrong is wrong. The world says to let others do what they want and you can do what you want. God says that we should all do what He wants whether it’s politically correct or not. When we put on Christ, or become devoted Christians, it may be a little uncomfortable in the beginning, but as they days roll on, we actually get transformed from what we were like, into what we have become - a reflection of Jesus Himself. When we begin to do this, we change our churches. Ne Remember or Our Homebound Members Rev. Cal & Sis. Bertha Carter Bro. Clifton Bridges Sis. Mer Corine Holston — Sis. Helen Knox Bro. H.C. & Sis. Socrerty The Difference Between Talents and Gifts... (Excerpt from the article by Carlton Helgerson, The Local Church) GIFTS TALENTS * Talents are natural * Gifts are supernatural * Talents are inherited from one's parents, ultimately from Adam * Gifts are received from God * Talents are received at birth; they are natural endowments. * Gifts are received at the time of the new birth * Talents are possessed both by saved people and by unsaved people. There are many unsaved people who are very talented (musical ability, artistic ability, athletic ability, mathematical ability, etc.). * Gifts are possessed only by saved people, those who are members of the -church which is His Body. An unsaved person might mimic a spiritual gift, but it is counterfeit and limited to self-activity (e.g.-a false prophet, a false teacher, etc.). * A man may be very talented as a TEACHER in the public school system or at a prestigious university. He may be recognized as an outstanding teacher by all of his co-workers. He may be very talented when it comes to communication skills and oratory. He may even win the "Teacher of the Year" Award. * This same man, upon believing on the Lord Jesus Christ, may not receive the gift of teaching. Spiritual gifts are determined by God not by any natural talents which a man may possess. If this same man should receive the gift of teaching it is above and beyond and distinct from any natural teaching talent which he had. It is something that he did not have prior to the new birth. * For full effectiveness talents need to be developed. A person who is naturally skilled musically must still learn to play an instrument, often demanding years of practice. Most professional athletes not only have natural talent but they have developed this talent through years of practice and hard work. * Gifts need to be exercised and this can only happen as the believer stays spiritually healthy and grows "in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ" (2 Peter 3:18). The proper exercise of spiritual gifts requires spiritual growth and maturity (Ephesians 4:13-16). * Talents possessed by believers ought to be surrendered and consecrated to the Lord and used for His honor and glory. Example: A skilled organist playing for a worship service "as unto the Lord." * Gifts are given by God for the outworking of God's LIFE as expressed by the Body of Christ. When the Body is healthy the LIFE of God is manifested and God is glorified (1 Corinthians 14:24-25). "There is a difference between natural talents and supernatural gifts. Talents come through the genes of natural inheritance; gifts directly by the Lord. Talent comes from the first Adam and, however attractive, is still a part of man's fallen nature. The gift is by the Holy Spirit, as it pleases Him." “NEW BEGINNINGS" Begin, Caring, Creation, Cross, Fresh, Genesis, God's Word, Grace, Jesus, Mercy, New, Old, Repent N E C A R G FR G O DB S$ W O R_ OD Ss S t!
