Ogden, Utah Dear Browning Co., John: We shall, of course, be very glad to take care of Adolph Miller as suggeted in your letter. We shall fit the stock to the action leaving the balance of the stock in the rough or nearly so, so that Mr. Todd can shape it to fit him. From the experiencewe have had, however, we would caution Mr. Todd not to attempt to change the fitting of the wood to the action or otherwise attempt to change the internal fitting of the action to the block of wood. If the stock bolt and cylinder in which the plunger operates are not perfectly free or if they are bent slightly the trigger will not function properly. Mr. Todd should see that the action fits quite as it does when the gn leaves here and that he does not attempt to change the drop of the stock by refitting the block to the frame, though I am sure you will appreciate what I am trying to explain. We shall give the matter prompt attention as soon as Adolph returns the gun after the state shoot. It is at least gratifying to note that he is developing into a better shooter, which will not only make him enjoy the sport more, but likewise be beneficial to us. We received the gun from Claude, however, as you state he did not give us full information. We tried the gun upon arrival and found that it apparently functioned normally. Claude stated the firing pins were broken, however, we found both of them were all right except that one of our new pins was in the lower barrel and one of the old ones in the upper barrel. Fearing that there may be some unusual freakish habit of this trigger we wanted to get in touch with the owner of the gun before making return shipment and we consequently wired Claude for this information, which he did not give use At any rate, the gun has long since been shipped back direct to the Montana Hardware Company to whom our records show it was originally sold. We put in a new connector, one new firing pin and generally worked the action over and I do not think any further difficulty will be encountered. Enclosed is copy of letter of July 20th from Claude in connection with this matter, though particular attention is called to his suggestion that in the future, we have the express and post offices in Ogden forward repair jobs direct to us rather than bother him with them. Upon examining his gun when it was last returned, we found that it was not the ejector hammer, but rather the firing pin which had jumped out of position, due to the fact that the firing pin screw had worked sufficiently loose to permit it to do so. We set the screw with a punch, also the other one, and are following a similer plan on all Supers as they go out hereafter. This is the first case of this kindwe have encountered. I have written Val in this connection. Garrett is a hard fellow to please, though I believe we are succeeding as well as we may expect to do, considering his temperament. In view of the experience we have already had with him and knowing him as we do, I believe we can handle him satisfactorilye You will be relieved to know that Val just wrote us that he has now made ejector hammers which he thinks impossibl@ to break and says he is sending some to us and that replacements will be made by the factory on hammers that have broken. He alsoj says that the factory will replace, so far as invoice cost is concerned, /firing pins that break, and are of the old type. Val says the new firing pin which Mr. Jordan has made and which we have been using for some time is all right in his opinion. So far we have never had one of these pins break and we have a good many of them in use and in guns that are standing up under heavy firing. It is interesting to note that Garrett soon got enough of the Winchester double gun and I am especially glad to note that he is shooting his Browning better and more than any of the gums he has. I am inclined to think that he will continue to do so and you may be sure that we have done our level best to see that nothing further can happen to his gun. He has been sufficiently cautioned against permitting tinkering with the gun to keep him from doing so or permitting it to be done by others. We have exchanged a number of letters with Mr. Minnock. The feelings of both doubtless make a good combination to fight our guns and us generally. I am confident, however, that by following our present plan of keeping our owners satisfied, building the guns properly, cultivating dealers in every constructive way that we can within reason and without too much expense, will, sooner or later, bring the desired results. From all the reports we get on the Remington Gun from various sections, it is a cheaply made and poorly constructed gun. It does seem to shoot well, at least the few we have heard of seem to shoot all right, but they do not handle anything like our guns and the finish is not tobe compared with the work done on our guns. We have had enough experience now with our single trigger that I am not at all afraid of installing triggers for the most execting shooter. Experience has been necessary to weed out the little difficulties that have arisen and I suppose shop, will give particulars no more than we should expect, though, every- thing considered, I believe our men have done a pretty good jobe Our men certainly go about the fitting of triggers in a most serious way and the final testing and inspection of a single trigger job is becoming quite a ceremony. They are also getting more efficient and less time is required to do the job better. The report which I recently sent to Marriner on the in this connection.
