Show will recall him furrowing his brow over the problems of Monson's freshman composition class in a corner of the library, plunging down the field with the football in a firm grip, or bending over to polish the brogans of one or another of the Phoenix brotherhood. He will be remembered for the warm, personal things, and for the significant things: his voice ringing out in the men's chorus, his ready sympathy, his sincere conviction that the principles he was soon to fight for are worth defending. He will be remembered for this, as a symbol of all the young men who left Weber College on April 8, 1943, climbing aboard the train for Fort Douglas and an unknown war while the band played 'Purple and White' and the girls wept in the station. Weber will not forget the rows of service flags, hung on empty lockers down the halls of the Central building, each scrawled gaily with its owner's nickname. In Dil and in the others who will not come back to Weber, we lose dear friends and young men of promise a spirit and a value that never can be regained. Yet their hope and enterprise need not be lost to us entirely. We who remain in college can gain, in remembering, a conviction that what they fought for is now more than ever worth attaining. We can study wisely and work for an understanding of what true peace is, and what we can do as educated people to help secure it. We can take on a greater stature for having known Dil and the boys he stands for. This is the only worthwhile tribute. 136 Part 3 NAVY fight Let's Go! Join the NAVY |
