Show Weldon Osborn Nye - Marines Weldon Nye, a corporal in the Marines, served two years in California at Camp Pendleton as a radio message router and telegraph agent. Bill Henry Steele - Coast Guard Bill Henry Steele served in the Coast Guard for four years. He gained the rank of machinist mate second class. His service earned him the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Medals, and the American Defense Medal. He served on both the East and West coasts. Baker C. Watkins - Marines Baker enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps when Pearl Harbor was attacked and underwent his basic training at Camp Pendleton, California. Following his basic training he was sent to New Zealand and was assigned to the Paymaster Department of 4th B, 10th Marines and served a year on the Island of New Caledonia. His job was to assure that the wounded in the hospitals received their pay. This 4th Battalion was often called the 'Mormon Battalion' because there were so many Utah and Idaho residents in that unit. Carl Keith White - Marines_ While at Weber College from 1941 to 1943, Carl had enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and continued there through his attendance at Colorado College and Columbia University. His entire reserve group was transferred to the Navy Reserve, and he continued training in Asbury Park, New Jersey, where he went through pre-midshipman training. Two weeks before graduation he became ill and had to drop out of that training; and by then, the war was winding down. He ended up serving as a gunner's mate on the USS Wyoming which was an experimental ordnance ship where they did testing of various guns and ammunition. 192 Part 5 The Home Front To Have and to Hold!
