Biographical/Historical Note |
The following is a video clip from an oral history interview with Dan Layton. "If we're in somewhere in the city or aboard ship--well, just people you'd be talking to, different men either in your division or in the mess hall or somewhere on the ship, they'd ask you the common thing, 'Where are you from?' You'd tell them Utah and they'd say, 'Oh yeah, 25th Street.' The most famous street in the nation and almost in the world at that time. And then sometimes you'd be down to, like if it was in San Diego or San Francisco or Seattle or somewhere, Shanghai, and you traveled and you get together with a group of men and, of course, you'd say, 'What state are you from?' Which is common among all of us here and they'd always mention 25th Street because their knowledge of 25th Street was the hub because of the railroad where they'd get off. I can't tell you how many, but every conversation, you'd run into somebody that had been there." |
