Biographical/Historical Note The following is a video clip from an oral history interview with Alice Hirai. "Then when the war was ended--see I didn't know this, too, because nobody talked about it--but we were given twenty-five dollars each and when they closed the gates of the camps we were all homeless; we didn't have a place to sleep or a place to eat. Some of us were fortunate; they had charitable organizations and had us arranged to go to some of the churches and YWCA and that. See, that explains in my head after the war I go to the temples in San Francisco and Salt Lake City and families are living in these places and I thought, 'That's weird that people live in churches. I wonder why.' But now I know. They were there until they were able to get back on their feet; fathers finding jobs and buying homes and all that. That's probably what happened."
