Show Football Queen Will Be Named Prior to Kickoff; Mesa Boasts Powerful Grid Machine Weber college opens an, attractive five-game football schedule against Mesa of Grand Junction, Colo., at John Affleck park Friday night, Sept. 23. Glendale, Compton, Albion and Branch Aggies will appear in scheduled games later in the season in Ogden. The Wildcats make their first appearance at John Affleck park against the Mavericks. Game time will be 8 p.m. sharp with pre-game ceremonies scheduled for | 7:30 p.m. A football queen and two attendants to rule over all home games of the Wildcats will be named by a committee of five. Eleven lovelies will parade before the crowd in bathing suits and in sports wear prior to the kickoff. From this list the queen and her attendants will be selected. Fred MacMurray, famous motion picture star, will have large trophy presented to the queen. Autographed pictures will go to the 11 candidates. The queen and attendants will each receive three month passes to the Eygptian theare for good measure. Early, in October when "Father Was a Fullback" is shown at the Eygptian, the candidates and the Weber college football team will be guests of Manager Ted Kirkmeyer. Fred MacMurray is the star of this movie. Queen Candidates Candidates for queen are: Carol Folkman, Margaret Harbertson, Janis Page, JoAnne Stuart, Peggy Wood, JoAnne Milnar, Betty Sandstrom, Barbara Foutz, Donna Olley, Delsa Davis and Gwen Fronk. Weber will face two of America's best junior college teams when they meet Compton and Glendale at Affleck. Compton will bring their band, pep organization and a party of 200 for this classic on October 14. "This is the most attractive home schedule in Weber college history," said Lawrence Burton, public relations director of the college. "We anticipate increased attendance in games at Affleck park. The big item of interest to fans will be the news that the screen in front of box seats and a portion of the grand stand at Affleck park will be entirely removed for the football games. This will give everyone perfect vision. "The college band will be out in full force for the opening game. We anticipate one of the largest crowds in Weber college history." Coach Milt Mecham is elated at the early conditioning of the Weberites. He is being assisted this season by Jim Foulger and Clair Anderson. Foulger is handling the backs and Anderson is coaching the line. Mecham directed the gridders through a long drill Saturday. He pronounces his squad fit and ready for powerful Mesa. Mecham plans to open the game against Mesa with the following lineup: EndsRay Rhead, 195 and Sterling Gardner, 200. Tackles Henry Gramberg, 210 and Vera Young, 195. "Our squad is in fine condition and we look for a well played, interesting and colorful contest." So far two league games have been played with Idaho teams victors in both. Southern Idaho college of education, the defending champion, champion, trimmed Utah Branch Agricultural college, 14 to 0, last week. Ricks college of Rexburg, walloped Westminster college in Salt Lake City, 32 to 0. Boise Junior colllege, third Idaho member, looked impressive with a 44 to 7 non-conference victory over Yakima, Wash., junior college. But Weber, too, looked strong in its first start, a 41 to 0 non-conference victory over Mesa college of Grand Junction, Colo. Two other conference members had non-league tilts. Snow college blanked Hill air force base, 36 to 0, but Dixie college lost to Palo Verde college of Blythe, Calif., 32 to 0. Two conference games are on this week's slate. Branch Agricultural college plays at Ricks and Carbon tangles with Snow in Ephraim. Both are Friday games. Other league teams will be in action.
