Cats Take Third Straight Tourney Weber Tips Snow for District T Wildcats Await Train Whistle For Hutchinson and Crack At U.S. Junior College Title By Charles Kreher With the train whistle for Hutchinson, Kansas, and the NJCAA championships ringing in their ears, two hot ball clubs battled right down to the final gun at Ogden high gym last night before Weber took over Snow college 57-45. Boise junior college cinched third place in the go- around when they beat Branch Aggies in the second game 51-49 and Northern Montana won consolation honors by trimming, Northeastern of Sheridan, Wyo., 73-68 in the opener before a standup crowd. Both clubs took off like jet fighters at the opening whistle and Dinsdale hit the hoop for the first Wildcat basket at the very beginning. Ivan Allred sank a foul shot for Snow to make it 2-1 and the party was on. Harbertson shot from away out, and made it and then in a fast exchange, Larry Wegkamp and his co-captain, Bearden Jarman started bullseyeing for the Badgers and it was 4-4. Over anxiousness seemed to hit Snow and the purple-clads from home at about the same time as Bill Hull of Weber was awarded the trophy for being outstanding player of the tourney, as retiring Vice President Milt Mecham announced Ogden as site of the tournament next year. Other members of the all-star squad are Allred, Snow; Kuhr, Montana; Totten, Boise; Buyok, Sheridan; Bond, B. A. C. Harbertson, Weber; Wegkamp, Snow; Dinsdale, Weber, and Adams, Casper. both aggregations appeared to be careening along out of control, missing shots and losing the ball as the pace grew hotter and hotter. It was 6-6, then 8-6, then 9-6, then 9-8, 11-8, 11-10 and 11-12 as Harbertson and Hull hit for Weber and Wegkamp and Hammon started chucking for Snow. Coach Reed Swenson flashed the word to steady the boys down a bit and the Cats stalled out for awhile until they regained their stride. There was no more than a three point difference all the way through the first half. Both clubs were playing a fine brand of fire- house ball and fouls were becoming more and more frequent. After Blackham had bucketed two to put the Badgers in the front Harbertson sank a free throw to even it 28-28. Blackham again tanked but Iron Man Glen Ashby came through with a one-hander at the whistle to make the score 30 to 30 at the half. Second half was more of the same Bill Hull who had piled up 13 points went out on fouls, Jar- man of Snow went out on fouls and still the battle waxed hot. Fancy Shooting Spectacular shooting was the order of the day in the final stanza and the crowd was going wild. With the seconds growing fewer Weber elected to waive seven foul pitches and Snow, two, Weber made 41 percent of chances from the field and Snow scored 30 percent of their tries for field goals. Bob Harbertson had 17 for his night's work and Don Dinsdale accounted for eight. For the Ephraim boys Ivan All- red was high with 13 and Larry Wegkamp dumped 11. Close Battle First game of the double header was a nip and tucker with Boise and B. A. C. keeping the point spread down. There wasn't a score of any kind for the first 6 minutes of the game and the Moon Mullens and C. W. Totten were yeoman hoopers for the Boiseans. Down at the final second it was 49-49 after being 28-23 Boise at the half, but Bob Gilbert shook himself loose from a pileup of Aggies and arched one toward the goal. The gun went off while the ball was still in the air and the Idaho boys were winners, 51-49.
