It was cold at the stadium but Coach Milt Mecham's aerial combination of Rog Hall to Ron Wilkinson kept things hot for the Wildcats and accounted for all of the scoring, the home team tallying twice in the second frame and once in the final period. Head Coach John Gagliardi's gold and blue clads held Weber pretty much to a standstill on the ground but the Hall to Wilkinson aerial express seemed to have the Montanans buffaloed. It was boom, boom and Weber was off and running. There was no score by either side in the first quarter as both teams felt each other out. Carroll kicked off to the purple and whites and Ron Wilkinson returned the ball to the Weber 40 where he was downed by a swarm of Saint tacklers. Don Budge at quarterback picked up three around right end, Don Shaw got six more on a spinner through the middle and Budge made it a first down by picking up 10 around left end. Carroll Leads Off Carroll started this aerial business after they intercepted a Weber pass. Ray Skillestad flipped a couple intended for Don Christensen. He tried it once too often, though, for Ray Sessions got in there for Weber, intercepted one of Skille-stad's pitches, and bringing the crowd to its feet, ran the pigskin back about 41 yards before being brought down by the Montana line. Budge picked up yard around right end, then fired a pass to Tony Toscan to move the ball to the Carroll 12 yard line. A Weber fumble was recovered by Dale Cowgill with the loss of a yard and on the next couple of plays the Carroll punched through and Frank Freidt spilled Budge on the Carroll six. On an exchange of punts the ball was on the 50-yard line when the gun for quarter went off. Aerial Attack Hall and Wilkinson started their aerial shenanigans right off in the second period rolling up three first downs and charging right up to the Carroll one foot line after heaves of 12, six, nine four yards and a big fat 12 yard jaunt around right end by Don Shaw. Talk about your stone walls, Carroll was one, for inches from their goal line, they held. With Lamont Lamb and Hall battering at the gates for the 'Cats it was no go. Claude Weaver kicked out for the embattled Saints, Montana variety, and Sessions ran it back to the Carroll 30. Lamb bucked through to the 28 and was stopped. On the next play Sessions got the ball on a snapback from Ed Campbell, lateraled off to Toscan who flipped over his shoulder to Hall and wham, like a V-2 rocket Hall pitched to Ron Wilkinson 20 yards away in the open. Ron ran like a scared bunny, clipping off 20 more yards and was over for a big six pointer. Don Budge's kick was right between the slats and it was a 7-0 ball game for Weber. Christensen snagged the ball for Carroll on the kick off and ran it back to the Wildcat 20, took it through right tackle on the ground and got all but trampled into the turf by the big Weber line on the next try for no gain. Another Pass Bill Merhens collected eight for the Saints on a reverse through center for about three and then on illegal use of hands by Weber, the Carroll crew got 15 yards more on the penalty. Weaver kicked out of bounds for Carroll on the Weber 49. A couple of plays later Hall, faded back, sidestepped five or six enemy linemen and a couple of backs who crashed through, and amid all the shot and shell calmly tossed one away to Wilkinson again 25 yards away. Wilkinson was way out of reach and fast-stepped it 24 more yards for the next Weber score. Point after touchdown was again good by Budge and it was Weber 14 and a goose egg for Carroll. Gary Loosli went in for Hall at quarter and a series of passes he aimed at Don Butler, generally missed fire, but he did pick up a first down for Weber by plunging through center. Weber was on its way to the Carroll 25 yard line when the half ended. Third period play showed Carroll playing a tighter game than they did the first half. Weber kicked out to Christensen who ran it back to his own 32 before being stopped by Verle Buhler. Getting no place through the Weber forward wall, the Saints kicked out to Sessions on the Carroll 35, he came back about five yards and then Lamb and Hall got it to midfield where Tom Kelly for the Saints plastered thfe ball carrier. Jolting Tackles Calvin Carter, Ron Lowder, Emory Keolanui, Max Cologna and Glen Hadfield, were making some jolting stops as Carroll started a march into Weber territory. As the frame ended, Christensen and Skillestad were trying to get their aerials working but they couldn't. Keolanui speared one and ran it back 10 yards before Bernard Sullivan, Bill Clifton and Jim Flynn came in to stop him. About the middle of the final stanza Hall started firing again. His first pitch to Don Butler was incomplete. The next one to Tony Toscan was good for 15 yards. Toscan being cut short by John Gillen as he made the catch. Then Kail whipped back and fired over to Wilkinson for about 26 came in to caught the ball but it About the of his arms straight stanza Hall stance a desperate His first pitch to Don just incomplete. Ron caught the ball but it spurted out of his arms straight in the air. He made a desperate lunge and grabbed the ball just as he was hit hard by Carroll's Bill Clifton. The resulting impact sent the ball squirting out of his arms toward the ground again. As both men stretched for the ball, the stands were in hysterics, but Ron scooped it in just ahead of Clifton's outsretched fingers, angled off to his left and was off on a 24 yard sprint for the final score of the night. Try for point was blocked but the 'Cats didn't need any more. They had finished their, home season for '51 with their fifth straight win and nary a loss.
