Show Mexico Quintet Plays Weber In Tilt Tonight In one of the highlights of the current basketball season, Weber college will play the Mexico City YMCA squad on Monday at 8 p.m. in the Weber College gymnasium. The "Y" squad was the first basketball team in Mexico and introduced the game in Mexico in 1902. At that time the YMCA had 300 members but since that time their membership has grown to 5000 and they floor one of the best basketball teams in the southern nation. The Mexico "Y" team also brought the first American squad to Mexico to play in 1933 and they were also the first Mexican team to invade the United States for a basketball series, also in 1933. Until 1950 the team was composed of men who had finished their university training and played ball only as a hobby. But at that time, Coach Carlos Bru decided that he could improve his team's brand of ball by playing students between the ages of 17 and 22. He reports that his team spirit and desire to win increased after the reorganization. The nickname for the Mexicanos is "The Red Devils." Last season they played a 19 game schedule, winning 13 and dropping 6. The Mexican basketball season is different from that in the United States. The equivalent of their "summer vacation" runs from December until February. The regular basketball season in Mexico commences in August and is completed by the time U. S. teams get underway with the regular season's play. Coach Bru will bring a fourteen man squad to Ogden to test Reed Swensons' "Wildcats." Bru is 22 years old and doubles, as coach and player for his team. He plays at both the forward and guard spots. Ink 1947 he played against Weber College for the University of Mexico. Tickets for thp international, game will go on sale prior to game time at 7 p.m. in the Weber gymnasium. Following their Weber game the Mexicans will travel on to Logan to play Utah State. |
