Wildcat Basketball Team Gets Set For New Cage Season Tests Weber's basketball program will get under way Friday, Nov. 24, against the BYU Frosh squad at Springville, Coach Reed Knute Swenson announced. The team is making steady progress under the watchful eyes of Mr. Swenson in the daily drills held at the school gym. Over thirty cage artists turned out for the opening practice and Swenson is well pleased with the attitude of the boys who are in suit this year. The first cut has been made and slowly the outstanding casba performers are beginning to show 'through. The entire squad will make the trip to Springville to give them the opportunity to work out against competition. Outlook Good for Team Things are looking good for the team this year and the entire student body is hoping for a repeat performance of last year's terrific team. It will take plenty of good material to floor a team equal to the 1949-50 team. They scored first place in the I.C.A.C. conference, first in the Region Four, competing with schools from the Intermountain area, and then they went to the Nationals at Hutchinson, Kan., and walked off with sixth place in the entire Nation. Outstanding Performers of Last Year Weber boasted an Ail-American On the squad last year by the name of Darrell Tucker, a hard driving, sharp shooting little Freshman. Tucker also placed on the honor team of the conference and the Region. Keith Seweli also won a berth on the first term in the conference and Region. This year's team will have more height than any for several seasons at the Wildcat lair. Basketball Outlook Reported Improving The outlook for basketball this season looks rather bright with returners and new-comers making a good showing for Head Coach Reed Knute Swenson at the daily drills held in the gymnasium at 4:00 p.m. Showing up good with his speed, accurate shooting and all-around field play, Bob Harbertson looks like he'll aid the Wildcats cause very much during the course of the heavy Weber schedule. He pulled down an all-State spot last year while performing for the | Ogden high Tigers, who took the Big Eight championship. Fellow Teammates Big Bill Hull, a former team mate of Harbertson, is also showing great possibilities with his deadly hook shots, tip-ins and control of the boards. He handles his six foot five frame very good for a big man and the share of the points should fall toward Hull. The Sophs have turned out some excellent cage artists this year. Glen Mclntyre, Larry Woods, Keith Downs, Marv Steele, Don Dinsdale, Glen Ashby, LeRoy Stone, Sherm Wayment and several other stand-outs are in suits and showing up very well. Weber Has Good Chance Weber may trot a team on the floor to equal the sparkling casba squad of last year. They have plenty of good shooters and some outstanding floor men. If the team stacks up the way it looks, Weber will have some excellent chances to walk off with honors again in the Intermountain basketball races. Good Schedule Planned The Weber coaches have outlined a sensational schedule for Ogden city fans and all in all some fine basketball demonstrations should be evident on game nights. Such teams as Clark, Vancouver, Vanport, Centralia, Olympic, Compton, B.A.C., Sice, Ricks, U.S.A.C. frosh, and Boise will furnish the opposition for the Wildcats.
