Compton Will Test Weber Friday Night Football fans of Ogden and northern Utah are promised a rare treat Friday night when the colorful Compton, Calif., junior college eleven meets Weber College at John Affleck park. Compton won the national junior college title last season. They walloped Duluth, Minnesota, in the little Rose Bowl game by a wide margin before nearly 65,000 fans. Compton has a student enrollment of 5,000. The school colors are maroon and gray. Last year Compton scored 419 points in 12 games as against 107 for the opposition. Tay Brown, former U.S.C. star, has coached the Compton eleven for eight seasons. In eight years his club has won the powerful western jaycee championship seven times. Brown is looked upon as the best junior college football mentor in America. He served a hitch in the service for Uncle Sam during the recent war. In the entire football history of Compton the worst defeat handed to an opponent was their 96-0 beating of Branch Aggies of Cedar City back in 1947. Compton and Weber have played a total of four games. The first one was played in 1936. Compton has won all four of the encounters. Last year's game was the one that netted the most points scored by each team. In that game Compton scored 60 points, with their great backfield star Hugh McEilleney running like a scared deer through the Weber line. Weber garnered its most points scored against Compton last year by scoring three touchdowns in the same game. Coach Milt Mecham and his assistants, Clair Anderson and Jim Foulger, will have their work cut out for them this week. Mecham looks for the toughest assignment of a year against Compton. Compton always has a great ball club, said Coach Mecham. The 1949 machine will be no exception. Naturally, we have held back some of our pet plays for the game with the sensational California machine. I anticipate a thriller-diller with passes galore for the spectators. If the weather man will give us a break the game should provide a lot of fine entertainment for the fans of Ogden and Utah. Mecham reports that his charges came out of the Southern Idaho College of Education contest in pretty good shape. Kickoff time on Friday will be eight p. m. with the half-time ceremony being allotted to Comp-ton Tickets for this feature battle are now on sale at The Mint, The Mecca, Bank Smokery and Weber college. A crowd of more than 7,000 is expected.
