Weber State University Department continues the 2003-04 season with the serious drama, Racing Demon, by David Hare, directed by Larry Dooley, opening on Friday, March 26th and continuing on the 27th, 30th*, 31st, April 1st, 2nd and 3rd at 7:30 pm in the Eccles Theater, Val A. Browning Center for the Performing Arts. This production is intended for mature audiences. The Tuesday performance, *March 30th, is presented for WSU students only. A WSU student Wildcat card is REQUIRED to be admitted to this performance. No other tickets will be sold at this Tuesday performance. Racing Demon is also a popular British card game where the quick and confident always beat the thoughtful and indecisive. This game serves as a telling metaphor for the quality of leadership that is valued in our culture. This British play examines the lives of several Anglican priests running a parish in a lower working class neighborhood. Each portrays a different approach to their profession and their faith. Although the play is set in England, the personal situations of the individuals reflect the varying relationships of individual participants and institutional organizations. From inner city to inner circles of power, this is a drama about the crisis of faith and loyalty in our institutions. Hare tells this slyly humorous and suspenseful story through four artfully interwoven problems: What will happen to a devoted clergyman (Rev. Lionel Espy) whose religious doubts and political opinions put his future at risk? How to handle a driven, new minister (Rev. Tony Ferris) whose passion to save souls may wreck lives in the process? What to do about a marriage (Heather Espy) wherein the pastoral duties displace the personal? And, finally, what will happen to one of Lionel’s discreet, dedicated colleagues (Rev. Harry Henderson) whom a yellow journalist (Iommy Adair) threatens to ruin with exposure of a controversial secret? Hare makes every character in this vast array a human being, foolish and fallible, but believable and pardonable. Racing Demon raises provocative questions about faith and loyalty that reverberate everywhere in our lives. Crumbling confidence in the Church serves only as a canvas on which Hare paints a vivid illustration of the conflict between human beings and the institutions that shape their lives. The insights Hare gives us about institutions in crisis -more- WEBER STATE UNIVERSITY PAE 2 oF 2: COMPANY DEPARTMENT OF PERFORMING ARTS 22 January 2004 are equally relevant to politics, the media and the corporate takeovers of the ‘90s. In this timely drama, as in many of his other plays, Hare examines people and institutions who "try to achieve control by pretending things are simpler than they are." The play gains a moral force and passion as it looks at what role the Church of England has to play in modern society. Is the focus salvation; members in the pews; and, if not, what relevance does it have? Director's comments by Larry Dooley, I found out that Racing Demon is the name of a card game which apparently alternates extreme patience with frenzied activity. Like many games, the advantage is in being quick, decisive and even ruthless. The characters in the play evidence all those qualities or else they fail. | Plays that center on religious characters rarely interest me because the characters seem to be either too pure or too demonic to believe. I’m certain that these people must exist but they really have little to do with “religion” as most of us experience it. The question for many today is, how does religion matter? Or perhaps, what is the role of an institutional church in society. Even those who define themselves as churchgoers often have a hard time finding connections between daily life and religion. People are deeply aware that ambition, pettiness and even hypocrisy do not cease to exist at the doors of the church, synagogue, temple or mosque. Many will claim, of course, that it only gets worse on the inside. But most of the time, the “inside” and the “outside” seem very much the same, which can be confusing for any of us. Racing Demon is a play for those who want the theatre to address the really big questions. There are “church types” in this play, but mostly they are human beings who represent the many conflicts between institutionalized religion and individual faith. They neither walk on water nor stalk their victims. There is humor and there is serious conflict. The issues are known to all of us: love, sexuality, anger, intrigue, the desire to believe, and the desire to be relevant. The playwright is not so unskilled as to provide all the answers, but he certainly knows how to raise the right questions. ” About the Playwright, David Hare David Hare is one of the most critically acclaimed, contemporary British playwrights. A playwright, director and filmmaker, Hare has written sixteen plays for the stage and seven original screenplays for cinema and TV. Racing Demon, which completed a successful run at Lincoln Center, was nominated for a Tony and awarded London's prestigious Olivier for Best Play. Skylight, his most recent play, recently played to rave reviews on Broadway. Racing Demon forms the first part of Hare's celebrated trilogy about the health of three British institutions-the Church, the Law and the State. Racing Demon explores the inner conflicts of the Church of England while Murmuring Judges takes a behind the scenes look at Britain's legal system and The Absence of War examines its political life. In preparation to writing the trilogy, Hare spent five years traveling around England interviewing countless individuals connected to these three contentious institutions. lirst presented in 1950, Mare weaves these compeiling conversations into a rich tapestry in Racing Demon. "My job," Hare believes, "basically consists of turning over the soil of people's lives, making people think about themselves and reconsider their attitudes." David Hare, former director of London's National Theatre, is one of the most critically acclaimed, contemporary British playwrights. A playwright, director and filmmaker, Hare has written fifteen plays for the stage and seven original screenplays for cinema and TV. Racing Demon, which recently completed a successful run at Lincoln Center, was nominated for a Tony and awarded London's prestigious Olivier for Best Play. Skylight, his most recent play, is currently running to rave reviews on Broadway. Performed widely across the country, his plays include Plenty (New York Critic's Circle Award), Map of the World, Pravda and The Secret Rapture among others.
