This letter was written before there was any question of obtaining additional automatics in exchange for our retarda= tion of the Two Shooters. According to your cabled instructions, I am attempting to obtain accord for the substitution of 15,000 automatic shotguns for I0,000 of the Two Shooters in 1953 according to the program set forth in my memorandumof September 19, 1952 without offering however any extra money for additional automatics. In this connection, I enclose a copy of my letter I believe you will agree that this letter without, however, of September 26, no pywmches have been pulled I hope, its being nasty. 1952. in Today, I had another discussion with Laloux upon this matter. It brought out that there is no disagreement between F.N. and ourselves as far as furnishing the market with the quantities that it desires. Laloux seems to be quite willing to raise au- tomatic production to 70 or 80,000 guns a year. The one question upon which we disagree, is how much money we are going to pay for the guns. Laloux admitted to me very frankly that our argu=ments had a lot of weight, however, he said again " I cannot go to my board of directors and ask them to approve an even further extension of the considerable part of this factory's production which we are allocating to you when our margin of profit is unsatisfactory. Nor can I ask them to approve the expenditure of any considerable amount of moneyto improve automatic installa-~ tions when the earnings record of this particular arm have been so poor throughout the years when they are compared with almost any other of the arms we make." He declared that he will probably agree on our terms to [0,000 automatics anyway in place of 10,000 Two Shooters, but that he wished to think it over a bit more and consult Demey (who is on vacation) before replying definitely.
