Show 7 - Q. Your equity is going down in your profitable Australian operations. Isn't that a negative? A. Yes, but there have been important tradeoffs for that. It has enabled us to go forward with Norwich Park and, very significantly, the state of Queensland has increased the amount of coking coal which CQCA can export. This authorization has been increased from approximately 300 million to 450 million tons with an additional provision that 100 million tons can be exported if it is mined from depths below 200 feet. This is a very important benefit to us and on balance, we think the total program is very attractive for Utah. Q. In your opinion, would you have gone ahead with Norwich Park if you hadn't merged with GE? A. I think, and this is my personal opinion, that we would have had to go ahead with it. I don't know to what extent diversification would have been an overriding factor -- perhaps we would have wanted to bring in additional partners, etc., but I think that because of our very favorable infrastructure position we would have found Norwich Park too attractive to pass up. Q. Let me ask you your personal reaction when Mr. Littlefield told you about the merger possibility? A. You must remember that when he first mentioned the merger possibility to me it was still at a conceptual stage it was still a reasonably undeveloped idea. It was just something that we would want to explore but it sounded interesting. Q. Did anyone from Utah (S.F.) go with Jones & Al Way to Australia? A. No, nor on Al Way's trip to Brazil as it would have created security problems. Q. How about the government change in Australia, did that come as any surprise? A. No. It had been evident for sometime that the government change in Australia was likely and it did not come as a surprise. |
