Show 4- Q. Do you think Utah would have been spotted without this planning? A. Utah by its very size was an exception. Strategic planning identified that raw materials and getting integrated into the general areas of Utah was not a bad idea. By the time Utah's need and GE's desire came together, we already knew that materials would be a good hedge against inflation. Then: There's Utah. And it fit the matrix. Strategic planning managers are not taking credit for Utah. Q. Strategic planning pinpointed materials ? A. That's a valid statement. The stage was set. Directions for expansion had been set. Q. It's hard for an outsider to quantify new materials and services as the fastest growing businesses. What are we talking about? A. Let's talk about services. GECC, a logical and an organic growth. As we build up our base of knowledge, we expand into other areas. Other examples given: service shops, radio and television broadcasting and cablevision. Q. How does the planning process work? A. (Explanation given.) Q. It's a fascinating processs. A. The most fascinating part of it: it's working. The morale of the troops - - is outstanding. What it is is entrepreneurship with controls...or risk containment. (At this point, Messrs. Frederic, Kraar and Vaber continued the discussion on an informal basis over lunch.) |
