Show 6- Q. How did Utah provide backward integration? A. (Explanation of price importance to GE as major user of copper.) Whether we use the copper or sell it, economically it doesn't make any difference. Copper is a nice aspect of the merger, but of longer range importance is coal. By-product of copper is rare metal called rhenium (Explanation of what it is used for and value to GE.) We do have incentives to find more uses for rhenium. Q. GE has a stake in mining technology? A, A great stake, Carbide tips. In that for 35 years. Large plant in Houston for oil industry drilling. Also a large business in coalmining drilling equipment. Diamond business which could revolutionize drilling. Also in electrical equipment business for mining drilling rigs. Q. New example where successful in developing a new technology? A. Some years ago in the R &D Lab we developed a new method of prospecting for uranium (Method explained.) Set up the Tere-dex Company in which we have an interest. No doubt that we'll increase our interest in new exploration techniques where Utah has an interest. Q. What kind of paper work is produced in strategic planning? A. Talk to Mike Allen on that when you see him this noon. The problem is to keep from getting buried in paper. We had too much paper at the beginning. I think we've simplified it. Greatest value in paper work is a discipline. (Explanation here of GE planning process, reviews, etc.) Q. Is the summary of all these trends identified in the process a very long thing? A. No. Available to strategic planners throughout the Company. The economic part is sent to all businesses so the entire company works on the same basis. This year there also will be several pages on technology guidelines. |
