Show 4 - Q. Some analysts say that when GE and Utah got together, Utah would not get as fast a growth. A. That's a statement I cannot disagree with. Absolutely. Q. So they in effect accepted a somewhat slower growth for more stability? A. That is a way of putting it. Also greater dividend...front-end loading. Q. Utah not a major supplier to GE on short-term? A. No. But a price protection...as a hedge against inflation. Take copper. If it goes up to $1 a pound, we have Utah's profit. Q. On your trip to Australia with Jones. How much did you get to see? A. (A description here of trip, tours, meetings, etc.) Q. Your impression? A. Both of us...I should speak only for myself...took a walk together and chatted about our observations. We were terribly impressed with the very low cost operations. Very little overburden...thick seams of coal; highly capital-intense mechanized operation. Short haul to coast. Impressed with quality of Utah people. Nine managers. Port manager...a super guy. Impressed with the town. Felt Australia would have a severe inflationary problem, but came away with a feeling that mining policy would not change under a new government...a great deal more pragmatic in implementing policies. Both of us had a feeling Australians were like Americans in their traditions and independence and fairness in judicial system so that no one company could become a target. Also found that never in history had there been a nationalization; nor difficulty in terms of getting foreign exchange out of the country. Those things just came out favorably in forming an impression. Q. You pretty much had similar impressions? A. Yes, we swapped them on our little walk. Q. You flew straight through from N.Y. to Australia and went morning to night when you got there? A. (Description of flight.) |
