Description Patriarchal blessing pronounced by John Smith upon Samuel Rose Parkinson. Blessing dated December 6, 1870. Hand-written on Oneida Mercantile Union letterhead. May have been copied from original blessing, since letterhead lists the date as 189_ and date has been written over in ink to read 1870.
Biographical/Historical Note Samuel Rose Parkinson was born in England, later moving with his family to Australia, Chile, and back to England, before finally emigrating to St. Louis, Missouri where he first came in contact with Mormons. Parkinson was baptized in 1849, when he was eighteen, and embarked westward to Utah by mule team in the summer of 1854. He settled in Franklin, Idaho, where he filled various church callings and practiced plural marriage. He was eventually arrested and convicted for practicing polygamy and served a brief jail term.
