Show Introduction The present exists in the fleeting now; the future stands only imagined; but the past endures in timeless moments remembered and cherished. The history of Weber lives as a composite of thousands upon thousands of memories of its students and alumni. Only an infinitesimal number of these will ever be written or gathered. Some memories celebrate the humorous; some are pleasant; some, poignant; a few reflect difficult times. All prevail with significance in the minds of those who remember them; and all, in the broader order of human encounter, are part of the Weber experience of a century and a decade. To these timeless moments of memory and history, this small anthology is dedicated. About ten years ago, Marjorie Crittenden and Althea Roberts, both members of the Emeriti Alumni Council of the Weber State Alumni Association, considered the possibility of collecting and publishing memories of former college students. Althea, who was President of the Council at that time, presented the idea to the full Council for consideration. Council members enthusiastically embraced the project and began collecting written memories. Letters were sent to alumni eliciting personal narratives, and during the next few years a significant number of remembrances were gathered. Speeches at reunions and other occasions containing special recollections were also gathered. A few oral interviews were conducted among older alumni. The Council held special workshops to identify photographs from yearbooks and other sources. Janet Sessions, a member of the Council, began compiling the accounts on computer disks. In 1997-98, the memories project was given priority status by the Emeriti Alumni Council. Holly Benson, who had already spent considerable time consolidating the memories, became the specialist on the Council. In 1998 Tom and Sharon Burton were appointed co-chairs of a committee to prepare the reminiscences for publication. Others on the committee were Holly Benson, Marjorie Crittenden, Ruth Darrington, and Jean Anne Waterstradt. Karen Stock of the Department of CATS (Communication, Arts, and Technical Services) of Weber State University provided some assistance, and Tyler Holt and Gary Toyn of the Alumni Office provided invaluable aid in graphic design and in preparing the document for print. Marjorie Crittenden designed the chapter dividers. In the editing process, the committee made particular effort to retain the wording and unique flavor of each narrative as it was written by the author, but some alterations were necessary. Had it not been for dedicated people who desired to see the memories in published form, the project might never have come to print. However, in the end, it is the memories of the writers themselves who have given the publication life and meaning. To you, the contributors, we give our esteem and appreciation. Your recollections provide a few personal and precious moments in the long and celebrated history of Weber State University. We thank you for sharing your memories with us. - The Memories Committee 1 |
