Rich 1266 n Morgan Valley Dr., Morgan, Utah SOURCE OF INFORMATION & PAGE NUMBERS: Some Incidents in the Lives of William Henry Rich & Flora Kate Rawle, William Henry Rich was born Sept. 1st 1857 in a log cabin in Centerville Utah, a son of John Henry & Lydia Pond Rich. He was only a year old when his parents with several more couples were called to leave their home and go to Payson and help to settle it. In 1861 he moved with his parents to Weber Valley now known an Morgan Co. Here his father purchased land and with his wife and family helped to build the town of Richville. His father John Henry Rich was born Sept, 1st 1832 in Throw Bridge England. His mother Lydia Pond was born Oct, 9th Whiteraw Wiltshire England. Lydia was baptized into the Mormon church when sixteen years of age, Soon after joining the church she became acquainted with John H. Rich This acquaintance soon ripened into courtship and they were married in the new church of England Dec. 15th 1852, In Jan. of 1853 they left their native land and set sail for America on the ship Jersey with rider George Halliday as their President. They were on the water six weeks and three days. John H. and Lydia Rich were industrious and well loved by n in this little valley. They held many civic and church positions, John H. was Patriarch of the Morgan Stake for many years and still held that office when he passed away Aug, 1st 1916. Lydia was a kind sincere and devoted wife and mother. Those who knew her loved and respected her. When the Morgan Ward Relief Society was organized in 1877 she was chosen President, and Aug. 18 1878 when the Morgan Stake Relief Society was organized she was chosen President of that. She held both offices until 1889 when she asked to be released from Ward President. When she was ask to fill this position she said to sister Eliza Roxy Snow who was in this Stake to organize it, and for whom her granddaughter Margaret Roxy Rich now (Mrs. Herbert J. Whittier) was named for, "I am not capable of that position Sister Snow said to her, "you are and you will fill it with honor", And this she did until 1909 when she had to be released on account of failing health. She died Dec. 10th 1911 at her home in Morgan. Willian H, Rich their son was a man of integrity and ambition. He held numerous offices both church and civic, and was a live builder of his community. He was the instigator and promoter of the Richville water system, electric lights, consolidation of the Richville public school with Morgan, was a trustee (now called school board member) for many, many years, road supervisor water commissioner of East Canyon Dam, a poll tax man (now called Co. commissioner) a merchant owned and operated the M. C. M. (I Morgan Cooperative Mercantile Institution) located where Doyle's Grocery and Post Office now stands. He was in the superintendcy of the Richville Ward Sunday School and Mutual Improvement association. He was 2nd counselor in the Morgan stake presidency from 1893 to 1900, and first counselor from 1900 to 1923. On Oct. 12th, 1885 he was set apart by Apostle Heber J. Grant and Elder Seymour B, Young in the Historians Office in Salt Lake City Utah for a mission to the Southern States, which he filled with honor. He died at his home in Richville Sept, 28th 1923 at the age of sixty- six. Flora Kate Rawle was born Mar. 2nd IS5.9 at Bristol England. She was the daughter of Richard and Sarah Ann Sweetland Rawle. She came with her parents to this country on Nov, 2nd 1872 at the age of 13. They settled in Morgan ward and lived where the Morgan Theater now is. Later her father built a home on the property where Morris Wilson home is, and just to the North of her granddaughter's home (Flora Dot Whittier) now Mrs. Richard Thackeray, and owned the land on which their house stands. Her mother and father were Prominent people in this valley, and were kind and lovable people. Her father was one of the first shoemakers and cobbler here and was one of the first if not the first, Patriarch of Morgan Stake, Her mother Sarah Ann Rawle was one of one first school teachers here a seamstress, and chosen the first Y.L.M.I.A of the Morgan Stake which was effected Aug. 18,1878. She was chosen secretary and corresponding secretary of the first Morgan Stake Relief Society. Richard and Sarah Ann Sweetland Rawle were blessed with five girls and two boys. Two girls being buried in England Sarah Ann died Dec.12th 1898, Richard died Aug. 10th 1901 Flora Kate Rawle Rich was known to all as "Aunt Flo" her hand work and crocheting were exquisite, and her hand pieced quilts were a work of art. She was chosen secretary of the first Y.L.M.I.A. of the Morgan Stake. She and her best friend traveled on foot carrying babies and taking other children by the hand for twenty-seven years as ward Relief Society teachers. She was stylish and particular in her dress even in her declining years. She met William H. Rich at a dance in the red brick school house where he went to school and stood on the Public Square near where the L. D. S. Church Welfare building is, in the year 1873. They were married in the Old Endowment House in Salt Lake City Jan. 9th, 1880 by Elder Danial H. Wells. During the time thirty years her husband served in the Morgan Stake Presidency she provided meals and lodging for all of the General Authorities who attended Stake Conferences from the time of President John Taylor down to President George Albert Smith. Eleven children was born to this couple, five of whom are still living. Flora Kate passed away Sept. 26th 1957 at the age of ninyt-eight & one-half years, at the home of her eldest son Richard in Morgan Utah. |
